The 43rd Annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala: A Night of Unity and Support
On May 15, 2025, the illustrious National Building Museum in Washington, DC, played host to the 43rd Annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala. This vibrant event brought together 52 members of Congress, who participated in a culinary cook-off aimed at raising funds and awareness for maternal and infant health issues. With the support of over 650 enthusiastic attendees, the gala managed to raise a remarkable $1.5 million, highlighting the importance of bipartisan support for health initiatives.
A Culinary Spectacle
The bipartisan cook-off was more than just an evening of delightful dishes; it showcased the creativity of lawmakers as they presented their signature meals. Each Congressman brought forth their culinary flair, creating an atmosphere filled with friendly competition and community spirit. Esteemed local chefs joined the event to moderate the cook-off, with some of the most exciting dishes crafted in front of a lively audience.
Among the panel of judges who evaluated the stunning dishes were renowned chefs, including:
- - Chef Robbie Meltzer from José Andrés Group
- - Chef Yuan Tang of Rooster & Owl
- - Chefs Gabe and Katherine Thompson of Thompson Italian
- - Chef Massimo Vicidomini of RPM Italian
Celebrating Inspiring Stories
Beyond the culinary excitement, one of the most poignant moments of the night was the story shared by the Bernardo family. They faced a harrowing experience when Jennifer Bernardo was rushed to the hospital during her 26th week of pregnancy due to complications. This led to the premature birth of her twins through emergency Cesarean delivery, with her son weighing only two pounds and her daughter merely one pound and eleven ounces. Their challenging journey in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) resonated with many guests, serving as a testimony to the vital work that the March of Dimes does in supporting families during such critical times.
Awards and Recognitions
The evening also recognized the creativity and talent within Congress through various award categories, resulting in honors for outstanding dishes. The winners were as follows:
- - Easiest Preparation: Rep. Bob Latta and Dr. Marcia Latta from Ohio for Scrumptious Peach Crisp
- - Hometown Hero: Rep. Rick Allen and Mrs. Robin Allen from Georgia for The Masters Pimento Cheese
- - Healthiest Recipe: Rep. Steven Horsford from Nevada for Trinidad Curry Chicken and Rice
- - Judge's Choice: Rep. Adrian Smith and Mrs. Andrea McDaniel Smith from Nebraska for Pork Ribs
- - Best Presentation: Rep. Bobby Scott from Virginia for Cream of Crab Soup
- - People's Choice: Rep. Laura Gillen from New York for Gruyere Rounds Appetizer
The gala was co-chaired by Austin Burnes, Danielle Burr, and Whitney VanMeter, with honorary co-chairs including prominent legislators like Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.). Such collaboration highlights the continuous dedication from all sides of the political spectrum to address maternal and infant health issues.

Their generosity contributes significantly to the mission of March of Dimes, which is committed to improving the health of mothers and infants everywhere.
