Extended until June 2026: Taro Gomi's Interactive Picture Book Exhibition

Experience the Enchanting World of Taro Gomi's Picture Books

Children's imaginations come vividly to life at the 'Asobouyo! Taro Gomi Picture Book Exhibition' currently taking place at the 'Picture and Word Library Micca' in Katsushika, Tokyo. Originally intended to run for a limited time, the exhibition received such an overwhelming response that it has been extended until June 28, 2026. This is a wonderful opportunity for families and children to delve into the creative worlds crafted by Taro Gomi, one of the most beloved picture book authors worldwide.

At the heart of this exhibition is Taro Gomi’s unique ability to captivate young readers through his playful and thought-provoking storytelling. Gomi has written and illustrated over 400 picture books, leaving a lasting impact on generations. Notably, his celebrated works such as "Kingyo ga Nigeta" (The Goldfish Escaped), the interactive 'Game Book' series, and his award-winning title "Boku wa Fune" are featured prominently in the exhibition.

The exhibition theme, 'This is Good!' reflects Gomi's approach to creativity and self-expression. His books do not impose restrictions; they embrace the beauty of individual thought and spontaneity. Visitors can expect to experience a space that encourages exploration and curiosity, mirroring the free-spirited essence of Gomi's artistic philosophy. As participants navigate through the vibrant showcases, they are invited to not just observe but to engage, play, and reflect.

The exhibition is divided into two distinct spaces: a public area that is free for everyone and an indoor area accessible only to Micca visitors. Within these spaces, attendees will find immersive installations that simulate stepping inside a picture book. Highlights include:

1. Join the Penguins: Enter alongside illustrations of penguins from Gomi's book "Narandeiru" (Lined Up).
2. Gifts Through the Window: Peek through a window to see who might be waiting for Christmas gifts.
3. Picture Book Plaza: Read favorite stories while leaving lovely messages for Gomi.

Within the indoor exhibition, exclusive activities await:
4. Explore the Atelier: Discover the enchanting world of "Kingyo ga Nigeta" by embarking on an adventure through its artist studio.
5. Flying over the Sea: Using illustrations, think creatively about how to cross an ocean.
6. Game Cubes: Tackle challenges from cube-shaped blocks scattered throughout the space, allowing for free and imaginative brainstorming.
7. Floating Ships: Encounter a mystical white ship as it gently glides within a darkened space.

Moreover, in collaboration with Tansey Co., the exhibition emphasizes sustainable and inclusive design, utilizing eco-friendly materials, fostering an environment that embraces diversity and is accessible to all.

In addition to the exhibition, the on-site tea room features themed menu items such as 'Strawberry Shaved Ice inspired by Kingyo ga Nigeta' and 'Key Curry inspired by Kingyo ga Nigeta,' further immersing visitors in Gomi's enchanting world.

For those interested in extending their experience, there will also be theater events and workshops tied to the exhibition, as well as a chance to purchase Gomi's books and related merchandise.

Micca, which opened in April 2018, is a dedicated library designed specifically for children. Approximately 57,000 visitors come to the library annually, making it an important cultural venue that aims to foster an environment where children can build a strong connection with books and the stories within.

By providing a space that encourages exploration and imagination, Micca not only supports children's literary development but also aims to create a community where they can joyfully discover their unique worlds through stories.
