On July 11, 2025, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, conducted a unique event at its affiliated kindergarten where a quadrupedal robot was the star attraction. This demonstration aimed to bridge the gap between innovative technology and early childhood education, providing an engaging learning experience for both the students and the kids.
The event utilized the Unitree Go2, a quadrupedal robot produced by Unitree, known for its advanced capabilities, along with a custom robot developed by the university's own students. The students designed this program to foster collaborative learning experiences that create new societal values.
Leading the event was Yuya Shimizu, a second-year doctoral student from the Graduate School of Environmental Science. Shimizu began the program by explaining the technology and the story behind the robots in a way that captivated the children's attention. His insightful explanations were met with awe and curiosity from the kindergarten kids, who watched excitedly as two robots were operated live. The interaction created a sense of intergenerational learning, where university students and young children exchanged knowledge and enthusiasm about technology.
One of the most entertaining segments of the event involved the children participating in a “race” with the robots, a lively competition that filled the venue with joy and excitement. The children cheered and laughed while they dashed alongside the robots, highlighting the playful and interactive nature of the technology. Furthermore, the kids had the opportunity to take control of the robot's movements through a controller, leading to expressions of amazement as they commanded the robots to perform various actions. For the parents, it was also a valuable chance to engage with cutting-edge technology alongside their children.
This event represented a significant moment in early education, exposing young learners to the latest advancements in technology and stimulating their interest in science and engineering. Simultaneously, for the university students, witnessing how their innovations resonate with children and parents provided a deep and reflective learning experience, reminding them how impactful technology can be on human emotions.
The collaboration between Okayama University and the kindergarten not only served as a successful educational model but also laid the groundwork for continued engagement and shared learning opportunities among students, children, and their families. Such initiatives are essential for nurturing curiosity and a passion for learning in the next generation. As Okayama University moves forward, it remains committed to fostering education and research activities deeply rooted in the community.
Through events like this, Okayama University aims to advance its role as a leading research institution with a focus on regional collaboration, innovation, and education. The university embraces its mission to create a sustainable future, aligning with global goals such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As they continue to engage with local communities and educational institutions, the impact of programs like this will inevitably reach far beyond the classroom.
The university looks forward to more innovative partnerships that enrich both educational experiences and technological development, promising an exciting future for learners of all ages in Okayama and beyond.
