Farewell Celebration for Takashimadaira Seventh Elementary School

The Takashimadaira Seventh Elementary School, located in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, is gearing up for an emotional farewell as it approaches its impending demolition. Following the feedback from the community wishing for an opportunity to bid farewell, the Urban Design Center Takashimadaira (UDCTak) will co-host a significant event on July 5, 2025, called the "Muneoroshi-ki@Takashimadaira Seventh Elementary School" as part of a larger Grand Finale Project. This event serves as a prelude to the culminating farewell ceremony scheduled for March 2026.

In a year-long initiative dubbed "Muneoroshi-ki," the aim is to honor the sentiments and memories of those connected to Takashimadaira Seventh Elementary School. This initiative has included various activities that start with inviting the community to reminisce and celebrate the school's impact on their lives. The first phase, held in March 2025, featured engaging lectures, discussion panels, and guided tours of the school, providing a platform for shared experiences and reflections.

The upcoming second phase brings exciting elements for participants. Among the highlights are the "Evening Coolness Alumni Reunion," where attendees can share memories while enjoying food from food trucks in the welcoming entrance porch. Additionally, the "Upcycling Project" invites residents to creatively use school waste and surplus items to promote sustainability, although prior registration is necessary to join this practical session. Attendees will also have the privilege to explore the nostalgic campus during the open school tour, which will cover the second and fourth floors as well as the rooftop pool. This hands-on experience allows former students and community members to walk through the halls where they once learned, sparking vivid memories.

As part of the planning process, UDCTak is arranging further events leading up to the Grand Finale. The third installment is anticipated around October 2025, followed by the fourth event slated for December 2025, all focused on fostering the collective spirit and opportunities for connections among those who cherish the school’s legacy.
