The Transformative Journey of Veronika: From War to Hope in Ukraine
In the peaceful suburbs of Kyiv, a little girl named Veronika, just six years old, once spent her days filled with laughter and games, blissfully unaware of the dark clouds looming over her homeland. That was until 2022, when the all-consuming war in Ukraine shattered her idyllic life. The echoes of explosions replaced her playful giggles, shifting her world into chaos.
In a matter of moments, Veronika and her family were forced to flee their home. The once familiar sounds of her neighborhood faded, replaced by the alarming sirens that urged them to safety. "When you hear an air raid alert, it’s dangerous. You grab everything, stuff it into your backpack, and run to the classroom door," Veronika recounted, her innocent words betraying the heavy burden she carried.
With schools closing and panic ensnaring families like her own, Veronika's family packed their lives into a few suitcases and left behind the only home she ever knew. Settling into a new life in Kyiv, Veronika embarked on her first-grade journey, but the unfamiliarity of her surroundings felt overwhelming. As she struggled to adapt, her parents resorted to relocating her to another school in hopes of easing her transition.
The war's relentless grip and the ceaseless upheaval took a toll on Veronika's mental health, leaving her grappling with feelings of loss and anxiety, desperate to find a sense of home and belonging. However, a glimmer of hope emerged from the chaos, thanks to Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and UNICEF Ukraine, who provided a framework for reintegration into formal education. This initiative not only offered her a chance to reclaim her learning but also facilitated social interaction, allowing her to heal from the abrupt disruptions in her life.
Her mother, Lyubov, noted, "When we arrived at the Ukrainian school, it was a completely new world for Veronika, as if she had landed on another planet. She was new, a stranger, and it was genuinely tough for her.” It was less of a warm, familiar embrace upon her return, and more about confronting the overwhelming challenges of beginning anew in an alien environment. The weight of her past experiences loomed large, leaving Veronika feeling isolated and uncertain.
To assist her journey towards adaptation and confidence rebuilding, Veronika participated in dynamic and engaging sessions designed specifically for children in her situation at her school. According to Valentyna, a child psychologist working closely with Veronika, "We work directly with displaced, refugee children and those from large or disadvantaged families. Everything is aimed at helping the child socialize and adjust more readily. In our sessions, we do everything possible to ensure Veronika integrates into an active group with enormous creative potential.”
These specialized sessions provided Veronika with a secure environment to reconnect with peers, express herself, and gradually regain the sense of belonging that had been stripped away from her. "Veronika began to make friends in class. The children started showing empathy and tolerance. In our sessions, they learned to communicate to understand each other and resolve conflicts,” Valentyna remarked.
The war in Ukraine has severely disrupted the education of millions, making it nearly impossible for many children to access in-person learning opportunities. Over 1,600 educational institutions have suffered damage or destruction as a result of the conflict. ECW's initiatives are designed to improve educational outcomes for crisis-affected children by creating safer physical learning environments, expanding digital and remote learning when feasible, and providing catch-up classes. These children are also receiving robust psychosocial and mental health support to help them heal, grow, and navigate the ongoing conflict.
Veronika's journey from the shadows of war to the light of friendship symbolizes resilience and hope. With support and compassion, children like her can transform their pain into purpose, step by step. The six-year-old expressed her newfound aspirations, stating, "I love math, English, art, and physical education. I dream of becoming a veterinarian, singer, or actress." Through hope and solidarity, her story continues to inspire countless others in similar circumstances.
