Fosun's Rural Doctors Program Recognized for Sustainable Development Impact by UNGC
Celebrating Two Decades of Sustainable Development at the UNGC
This year marks a significant milestone in sustainable development, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The UNGC has made strides in promoting principles related to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues since its inception. In a momentous event held on November 29, 2024, at the UN Compound in Beijing, Fosun's 'Rural Doctors Program Empowering Rural Medical Services' was recognized as one of the exemplary cases in the UNGC's report titled '20 Cases of Private Sector's Sustainable Development in China for 20 Years.'
The compilation of cases highlights successful corporate initiatives that demonstrate innovation, economic viability, and a commitment to societal welfare. A meticulous review conducted by UN representatives and academia over four months led to the selection of 20 notable cases from various sectors, showcasing how businesses can effectively contribute to sustainable development goals.
Fosun’s Commitment to Rural Healthcare
This recognition arrives as Fosun marks its 10th year as a member of the UNGC. Driven by a vision of 'business for good', Fosun has reinforced its commitment to ESG principles through innovative initiatives that prioritize social contribution. A testament to its efforts is the MSCI ESG rating of 'AA' achieved by Fosun, distinguishing it as the only conglomerate in Greater China to attain such a high rating.
During the launch event, Zhang Yifei, Deputy Chief Strategic Empowerment Officer and General Manager of Fosun’s Corporate Social Responsibility Department, emphasized the impact of the Rural Doctors Program in empowering rural healthcare. This initiative was launched in 2017 in collaboration with the National Health Commission and several foundations, collectively striving for the 'Health by Heart - Rural Doctors Program' vision. Designed under the '5 One Action' framework, the program aims to cultivate and uplift rural doctors through a robust support system, addressing grassroots healthcare challenges.
The Positive Impact of the Program
Over the past seven years, the Rural Doctors Program has grown significantly, encompassing 78 counties across 16 provinces in China, supporting approximately 25,000 rural doctors and impacting over 3 million grassroots families. Recognition of Fosun's dedication includes accolades such as the 'National Advanced Collective in Poverty Alleviation' and several charity awards for its contributions towards societal betterment.
The principles of collaboration and social responsibility lie at the core of Fosun’s initiatives. By supporting rural medical professionals, Fosun aims to navigate the challenges of healthcare accessibility in underprivileged areas, ensuring that everyone receives the care they need regardless of location.
Looking Forward: Future Aspirations
As the Rural Doctors Program continues to evolve, Fosun remains committed to enhancing the capabilities of rural doctors and expanding its partnerships to further support rural revitalization efforts. The overarching goal is to achieve high-quality and sustainable development while nurturing a compassionate and caring society. Moving forward, Fosun plans to not only maintain but amplify its impact on healthcare and community support through innovative programs that align with the principles of sustainable development.
Fosun's recognition by UNGC serves not just as an accolade but as a driving force to reinvigorate its efforts in rural healthcare, embodying the ethos of contributing positively to society and fostering an environment where every individual has access to vital healthcare services.
