The 4th Tateshina Conference: Driving Towards Zero Traffic Accidents

On July 18th, the Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) hosted the 4th Tateshina Conference in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, focused on discussions and initiatives aimed at making traffic accidents a thing of the past. Since its inception in 2019, this gathering has served as a platform for cross-industry dialogue about concrete actions we can take to achieve zero accidents.

The Concept of a 'Trinity' Approach to Traffic Safety

While Japan has seen a long-term decline in traffic-related deaths and injuries, recent trends suggest a leveling off. This signals the necessity for fresh perspectives and approaches. The Tateshina Conference has consistently leaned on the idea that improvements must involve three key components: vehicles, human behavior, and traffic infrastructure. Recently, sub-committees have been formed to gather multidimensional strategies for effective traffic safety measures.

This year’s conference theme, “The Roots of Tateshina: Connecting Intentions to Action,” harked back to the historical significance of Seikou-ji Temple, established to pray for road safety. Participants engaged in discussions focusing on two main aspects: “changing human behavior” and “collaborative infrastructure,” identifying challenges and future directions for efforts to eliminate traffic accidents.
