In an impressive display of support for Ukraine's role in the chess world, Timur Turlov, a prominent chess leader and candidate for the presidency of FIDE (the International Chess Federation), has presented a compelling vision for enhanced representation of Ukraine within the FIDE leadership. This proposition has sparked significant dialogue in the chess community as FIDE gears up for its presidential elections in 2026.

With the elections approaching, Turlov, who is running alongside the five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand, highlighted in a recent post on social media the longstanding contributions of Ukraine to international chess. He pointed out that Ukraine has produced generations of talented players and coaches who have made a mark on the global chess scene.

Turlov asserts, “Ukraine is one of the great chess nations in the world,” emphasizing that the nation should have a dedicated voice in FIDE's decision-making processes. Such representation is imperative, he believes, for addressing the significant geopolitical challenges that may affect the chess community’s dynamics globally.

Seeking to solidify this proposal, Turlov reached out to Mykhailo Podolyak, a key advisor to Ukraine’s presidential office, encouraging him to consider nominating a candidate to serve within FIDE's leadership structure. Podolyak responded positively, expressing his support for Turlov’s reform vision and indicating his willingness to personally collaborate with Turlov’s new FIDE team. He stressed the need for international organizations to focus on fundamental sporting objectives and fair competition, devoid of external political influences.
