Music for Unity: The Balkan Chamber Orchestra's Upcoming Concerts

The Balkan Chamber Orchestra, founded in 2007 with the mission of promoting coexistence and peace in the Balkan Peninsula, is set to perform a series of concerts titled World Peace Concert 2026 from September to October. The Tokyo performances will kick off on September 28, featuring Nobuko Akino, an actress and artist, as the Japanese storyteller for the opera “The Breasts of Tiresias” by Francis Poulenc. The following day, on September 29, the orchestra will collaborate with local musicians and choirs to tackle Verdi's entire “Requiem”, showcasing a blend of cultures united through music. A special concert in Nagoya on October 3 will see the orchestra joining forces with the Chubu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Nagoya City Chorus for another powerful rendition of “Requiem”.

A Miraculous Orchestra Experience

Revered as a symbol of ethnic harmony, the Balkan Chamber Orchestra, initiated by conductor Toshio Yagisawa, brings together musicians from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds to create a unified musical experience. Since its inception, this ensemble has performed globally, bridging gaps and fostering dialogue through music. Their notable achievements include a concert featuring a mixed-ethnic musical collective shortly after the Kosovo conflict in 2009, alongside a documentary titled “Bridging Music in the Battlefield,” which won the Grand Prize at the 6th Japanese Broadcasting Culture Awards. Their inspiring journey has also earned them the acclaim of being called the “Miraculous Orchestra”, with their story included in Japanese high school textbooks.

As they celebrate 20 years of dedication in 2027, the musicians carry a compelling message of peace, particularly poignant amidst rising global conflicts. The immersive sounds they create with Japanese musicians and citizen choirs will echo a profound wish for peace, demonstrating music's potential to transcend divisions.

The previous concert in May 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of post-war Japan with a poignant performance featuring the Hibakusha Piano, uniting many hearts in a shared emotional journey. This upcoming series promises equally engaging experiences, including the spirited comic opera “The Breasts of Tiresias” and the deeply moving “Requiem.”

In Tokyo, acclaimed flautist and Ryukakusan president, Ryuta Fujii, will perform “Flute Concerto” by Sho Tohka, collaborating with the Balkan Chamber Orchestra. A special talk session is planned, where Fujii and Yagisawa will discuss their shared commitment to promoting harmony through music.
