Rediscovering Japanese Culture through Art
In the ever-evolving landscape of Japanese culture and education, the Nippori Seminar radio program is a shining example of how diverse backgrounds can lead to rich learning experiences. Hosted by LAMM Corporation, based in Arakawa, Tokyo, this program aims to foster growth through storytelling and sharing different career paths. The excitement of the 26th episode features the talented artist Chalkboy, who shares his incredible journey in the world of art and creativity.
Chalkboy, who will be featured in the two-part series, kicks off his episode with insights from his life that shaped his artistic career. The first part was broadcasted on July 11, 2025, across various podcast platforms. Chalkboy's artistic journey began during his junior high school days when he discovered his talent for lettering psychedelic records after being encouraged by his art teacher. Despite being drawn to art, he initially chose to pursue basketball and turned down offers to join the art club. However, his artistic potential was nurtured as he enrolled in a craft high school, shaping his future career.
Unfortunately, after starting a job post-graduation, Chalkboy faced immense stress, leading to a battle with depression. Reflecting on this challenging period, he expressed a transformative realization that, having hit rock bottom, he could now pursue what he truly loved. This revelation inspired him to study at an art school in London, but financial limitations forced him to return to Japan. Upon his return, Chalkboy took a part-time job at a café where he began creating live art on a large chalkboard, captivating customers with his hand-painted beer labels and menus. His informal performances caught the attention of the café's owner, who eventually provided him with opportunities to create chalk art in other cafes and businesses.
The breakthrough moment for Chalkboy came when one of his works was published in an architecture magazine, solidifying his identity as an artist. He later transitioned from part-time work to founding WHW! (What a Hand-Written World), a team dedicated to spreading the charm of hand-drawn art. Currently, Chalkboy runs a breakfast café, EENY BREAKFAST & SHOP, in Kamakura while simultaneously engaging in various artistic endeavors and continuing to explore new creative horizons.
Through our interview, we explored significant landmarks in Chalkboy's life, including how witnessing his father's sudden career change during his elementary school years profoundly influenced his perspectives on life's possibilities. This critical experience, coupled with his lifelong fascination with lettering, ultimately led him to embrace art full-time. The program beautifully juxtaposes his formative years, through struggles with mental health, to his growth as Chalkboy and beyond.
As Chalkboy looks to the future, he expressed a desire to tackle large-scale projects, bringing his hand-drawn artistry to monumental structures like dams and bridges. His visionary goal speaks volumes about his passion and belief in the unique value of human artistry in an age dominated by technology.
To immerse yourself in the world of Chalkboy and learn about his artistic philosophy, be sure to tune in to both parts of this captivating series, available on
