The Rise of Digital Maps: A Case Study of Uzumasa Movie Village

Introduction

In a groundbreaking shift toward digital transformation, Uzumasa Movie Village in Kyoto has successfully integrated a digital floor map known as "Metamaps." Within just five months of its launch, it has surged past 40,000 users, indicating a considerable demand for innovative and efficient navigation solutions in entertainment venues.

The Growth of Digital Maps

The new digital map has created a seamless experience for visitors since its introduction in March 2026. The platform is designed not only to enhance convenience but also to significantly reduce printing costs associated with traditional paper maps. Approximately 80% of the map's usage comes from smartphones, while the website reported around 800 route searches, demonstrating its high engagement and utility.

In comparison to conventional paper or PDF maps, the digital format provides a variety of functionalities including attraction information, live updates on waiting times, and route planning capabilities – all possible through a web browser interface. The introduction of Metamaps is part of a broader trend where many theme parks and commercial facilities are transitioning to digital mapping solutions, with over 160 installations completed in Japan in just three and a half years.

Cost-Effective Solution

The historical reliance on physical maps involved substantial costs and logistic challenges for Uzumasa Movie Village. Previously, the facility had to reprint maps each time changes were required, significantly increasing expenses, especially when producing multilingual versions. However, with the implementation of Metamaps, information updates are now automated. This system automatically reflects changes from the official website onto the digital map, allowing the venue to cut down its physical map varieties from five to one and reduce the languages offered from five to just Japanese and English.

This move not only enhances visitor convenience but also marks a critical shift toward sustainability by decreasing dependence on paper resources.

Future Plans for Visitor Engagement

Uzumasa Movie Village plans to further enhance its digital map capabilities by introducing real-time updates for attraction wait times and crowd status starting summer 2026. Future initiatives will also include digital stamp rallies and analytical tools to utilize visitor mobility data more effectively.

Hiroshi Kida, Chief Producer of the Public Relations Department at Uzumasa Movie Village, stated, "Transitioning to digital maps has alleviated the significant costs associated with reprinting physical maps, making it easier for us to keep our visitors informed in real-time. Given that our attraction availability can change throughout the day, I’m thrilled about how well the digital map can represent these fluctuations. The feedback we receive via the data dashboard will certainly inform our future operations."

Overview of the Facility

Uzumasa Movie Village serves as an experiential theme park centered around Toei Studios, offering visitors a taste of the Edo period with live performances, cultural experiences, and culinary delights. Visitors can immerse themselves in a rich historical environment that articulates a blend of education and entertainment.
