Okayama University Hosts SX Platform Symposium
On June 8, 2026, Okayama University organized the SX (Shared Transformation) Platform Symposium titled 'Building a New Research Foundation Starting from Borrowing' at the Tsushima campus's KIBINOVE innovation lab. This event was conducted in an online format and is a continuation of the university's participation in the Research Infrastructure Expo 2026, organized by the General Incorporated Association for Research Infrastructure (CORE).
The symposium gathered 214 participants from various professions, including university staff, businesses, and government agencies. The opening speech by President Yasuto Nasu was followed by presentations from several key figures, including Vice President Nobuhito Sato and other senior staff members who explained the SX Platform's objectives.
A focal point of the discussion was the current decline in Japan's research environment compared to other countries. The speakers emphasized the importance of transitioning from purchasing research equipment to borrowing it, which not only enhances research capabilities and nurturing talent but also strengthens the research and development abilities of Japan's equipment manufacturers.
Following the presentations, a panel discussion took place, moderated by Vice President Sato alongside participants such as Senior Policy Researcher Yasunobu Takamura and Director Shinichi Katagiri from JEOL Ltd. The panel discussed various topics including the high costs associated with purchasing and maintaining research equipment, the realities of leasing and renting, and the benefits of revitalizing the secondary market for research equipment in Japan.
In his concluding remarks, Vice President Sato highlighted the significance of the symposium's discussions in embodying the theme of the Research Infrastructure Expo 2026, 'Collaborative Research Foundations: Innovation and Partnerships Open New Stages.' He expressed confidence that shared perspectives among university staff, researchers, corporate employees, and government officials will provide strength to support future research foundations.
Okayama University is committed to fostering research and innovation across Japan by proactively identifying and addressing challenges faced by other universities and institutions. It is a designated university under the 'Regional Core and Distinctive Research University Promotion Project (J-PEAKS)' and aspires to co-create the future of both the region and the planet through innovative research initiatives.
As a continuation of its efforts, Okayama University encourages stakeholders to view the symposium's discussions and presentations, with resources made available on both its YouTube channel and CORE’s website. The university and its technical staff are eager to maintain a relentless pursuit of change and challenge while fostering a culture of collaboration and shared ownership in research resources.
The event not only showcased a transformative approach to research equipment but also set the stage for continued conversations on bolstering Japan's research ecosystem.

Looking ahead, President Nasu noted, 'The SX Platform represents a groundbreaking rental-leasing service without the usual installation, maintenance, repair, and removal costs. It allows institutions to buy only essential equipment while borrowing the rest at cost-effective rates. As we move forward, it's crucial for universities to adapt and recognize their role not just for themselves but for the entire nation.'
