Austrian and Serbian Businesses Strengthen Ties Ahead of EXPO 2027 in Belgrade
Strengthening Business Relations between Austria and Serbia
On October 22, representatives from the business and tourism sectors of Austria and Serbia came together in Vienna for a networking event dubbed "Visit Serbia B2B Networking." This event aimed to explore upcoming opportunities for trade, investment, and cross-border cooperation in anticipation of the EXPO 2027, which will be hosted in Belgrade. This EXPO marks a significant milestone as the first specialized exhibition in the Western Balkans, promoting innovation and collaboration among regional players.
The Austrian participation at the expo, themed "Join the Flow," revolves around the Danube River, a central symbol connecting both nations and representing burgeoning business opportunities.
Igor Kovačević, Chief Operating Officer and Director of the International Participants Department at EXPO 2027, expressed, "We strive to help businesses transform shared interests into concrete opportunities ranging from new partnerships to travel programs that attract visitors to Belgrade." His sentiments reflect a broader objective to forge strong connections that could enhance economic ties between the two countries.
According to the Austrian Embassy, the nation's investment in Serbia has reached approximately €3.5 billion, making Austria the third-largest foreign investor in Serbia. More than 870 Austrian companies currently operate in Serbia, employing around 26,000 people. The economic interdependence illustrates how the Danube has historically linked the nations and continues to do so through business, culture, and shared human experiences.
Alf Netek, Deputy Commissioner for the Austrian section of the EXPO 2027, emphasized the historical ties, stating, "The Danube has connected our countries for centuries, and today it binds us together through business, innovation, culture, and people." The speakers at the event also highlighted tourism as a key area for growth, with Austria witnessing a 2.2% increase in Serbian visitors between January and August 2026.
Furthermore, fluctuations in overnight stays rose by 2.9%, totaling 77,922 nights, reflecting a growing interest and potential for tourism collaboration. Discussions also included the development of joint itineraries that would combine the themes of the EXPO with immersive experiences across Serbia.
