Austrian and Serbian Businesses Strengthen Ties Ahead of EXPO 2027 in Belgrade
Strengthening Economic Partnerships: Austrians and Serbians Unite for EXPO 2027
In a vibrant gathering held on October 22, 2026, in Vienna, Austrian and Serbian business leaders and tourism stakeholders came together to explore new avenues for collaboration. This event, titled "Visit Serbia B2B Networking," was centered around generating interest and facilitating investments in light of the upcoming EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, the first specialized exposition to take place in the Balkans.
The Austrian pavilion is themed "Join the Flow," symbolizing the Danube River, which has historically connected Austria and Serbia through both economic and cultural ties. "Our goal is to translate mutual interests into tangible projects that range from partnerships to tourism offers that attract visitors to Belgrade and other parts of Serbia," stated Igor Kovačević, the director of operations for EXPO 2027.
According to the Austrian embassy in Belgrade, the investments made by Austrian businesses in Serbia are substantial, amounting to approximately 3.5 billion euros. Austria has secured its position as the third-largest foreign investor in Serbia, housing around 870 companies that employ around 26,000 people. Alf Netek, the deputy commissioner of the Austrian section for EXPO 2027, emphasized the longstanding connection fostered by the Danube. "For centuries, the Danube has linked our two countries. Today, these connections extend into business, innovation, culture, and human exchanges," he remarked.
The potential for economic growth is evident, with data indicating that from January to August 2026, Serbia captured 33,025 arrivals from Austrian tourists, marking a 2.2% increase year-over-year, while the number of overnight stays rose to 77,922—a 2.9% increase. With EXPO 2027 approaching, discussions have commenced around creating tours that combine attendance at the expo with experiences exploring Serbia.
Looking Ahead to EXPO 2027
Scheduled to take place from May 15 to August 15, 2027, the EXPO will center around the theme "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All." This exposition is expected to draw over 140 exhibitors and millions of visitors, further cementing Serbia’s place on the global stage.
As preparatory events unfold, the focus remains sharply on building sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships between Austria and Serbia that pave the way for innovation and cultural exchange. The joint efforts demonstrated in Vienna signify a promising future as both nations gear up for a flourishing collaboration at the EXPO and beyond.
In a world where connections matter more than ever, the upcoming EXPO 2027 represents not just an exhibit of innovation and culture, but a powerful platform to reinforce the long-standing ties between Austria and Serbia, reflecting a shared vision for the future.
Envisioning a prosperous future, both nations look forward to engaging with each other’s strengths to attract international interest and investment, enhancing the bilateral relationships built over generations.
