Echandia Secures Major Contract for Canadian Coast Guard Hybrid Icebreaker

Echandia Makes Waves with New Hybrid Icebreaker Contract

Echandia, a prominent Swedish supplier of innovative maritime battery systems, recently reached a significant milestone by securing an order from ABB. This order involves supplying a 3.7 MWh battery system for a cutting-edge hybrid icebreaker that will serve the Canadian Coast Guard. Construction of this vessel will take place at the Helsinki Shipyard, making this contract Echandia's first venture into the Canadian market.

The hybrid icebreaker represents a step forward in maritime technology, combining traditional propulsion methods with advanced battery systems. The integration of these features is expected to reduce emissions significantly and enhance energy efficiency, particularly in the challenging conditions of the Arctic waters where the vessel will operate.

A Trust in Technology

"This contract is a momentous achievement for Echandia," stated Torbjörn Bäck, CEO of Echandia. He emphasized that this order not only signifies entry into a vital new market but also reflects the confidence placed in their technology by esteemed industry leaders such as ABB and the Canadian Coast Guard.

ABB, recognized globally for its advancements in technology focusing on electrification and automation, awarded the contract based on the performance track record of Echandia's LTO-based (lithium-titanate oxide) battery system. The effectiveness of these battery systems in extreme environments with space constraints played a decisive role in the selection process. Samuli Hänninen, Global Segment Manager for Icebreaking ships at ABB's Marine and Ports division remarked, "Echandia provided a strong solution that excelled in terms of reliability, safety, and overall lifetime, making the decision straightforward for us."

Future Prospects

The delivery of the battery system is scheduled for the second half of 2026, with the icebreaker intended to commence its operations by 2028. This development is pivotal as Echandia continues to establish itself as a major contributor to the decarbonization of the maritime sector. With almost 100 vessels benefiting from their battery systems—including ferries, offshore support vessels, and naval ships—Echandia's impact on the industry is growing rapidly.
