New PGCE Qualification Empowers Parents to Select Private Tutors with Assurance

Empowering Parents with the New PGCE Qualification for Tutors

In an effort to enhance the standards of private tutoring, the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has introduced a postgraduate qualification specifically tailored for tutors. This qualification, known as the PGCE Tutoring, is designed to provide families with a clearer insight into the qualifications and training of their chosen tutors, addressing a growing demand for professional standards in educational support.

Understanding the Need for Qualification

As private tutoring gains popularity, particularly in the UK, many parents are faced with the challenge of selecting a tutor who is not only knowledgeable but also employs effective teaching strategies suited to their child's learning needs. According to a survey conducted by Tutors International, a staggering 54% of UK adults mistakenly believe that tutors are mandated to hold recognized teaching qualifications. Furthermore, 39% assume that tutors must be registered with a regulatory body. This misconception highlights the urgent need for a structured qualification that conveys the expertise and reliability of tutors.

The PGCE Tutoring course aims to bridge this gap. It not only hones tutors' subject knowledge but also emphasizes individual learner adaptation, progress support, evidence-informed approaches, and essential safeguarding practices. Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International and a prominent figure in educational support, emphasizes the importance of this qualification, noting that parents entrust tutors with their children's education and deserve assurance regarding the tutors' professionalism.

The Structure of the PGCE Tutoring Course

The PGCE Tutoring is structured as a one-year, part-time course delivered online, making it accessible to current and aspiring tutors. The course includes modules focusing on practical teaching strategies, inclusive education, and the application of professional standards. Although the qualification itself does not create a legal requirement for tutors to hold it, it serves as a vital reference point for parents when assessing a tutor's capability and reliability.

Moreover, the course encourages reflection on the impact of teaching methods, ensuring that tutors continuously improve their practice. According to Mark Avery, Senior Lecturer in Education at UWE Bristol,
