Innovative Transportation Solutions to Tackle Scope 3 Emissions in Freight
Addressing Scope 3 Emissions in Freight Operations
As many businesses strive to lower their greenhouse gas emissions, the focus is increasingly on aspects of operations that extend beyond their own facilities, particularly transportation. PTI, the commercial brand of Paper Transport, LLC, is making significant strides in integrating emissions reduction strategies into daily freight operations. They are collaborating with Graphic Packaging International, a global leader in sustainable consumer packaging, to advance these efforts through an innovative approach involving a fleet powered by renewable natural gas (RNG).
The Task at Hand
Transportation has emerged as a pivotal factor in discussions about corporate sustainability. Companies are realizing the importance of addressing scope 3 emissions, which includes all indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, particularly those related to transportation. PTI is stepping up to the challenge by operating a fleet that services key routes between Chicago and Kalamazoo, designed specifically to illustrate how transportation can be more sustainable.
The fleet consists of eight trucks, equipped with cutting-edge Cummins X15N natural gas engines. This provides a platform not only for transporting paperboard and recovered fiber through Graphic Packaging's supply chain but also for gathering vital insights into the performance of alternative fuels.
Insights from Industry Leaders
Domingo Amunategui, Vice President of Logistics at Graphic Packaging, spoke about the project. He noted, “In line with our Better, Every Day philosophy, we are committed to continuous improvement through innovative, data-driven solutions that bolster operational excellence. This initiative helps inform our actions to tackle Scope 3 emissions.” He emphasized the value gained over the past year from this collaboration, highlighting how it has shed light on the feasibility of alternative fuels integrated into freight operations without compromising quality of service.
PTI’s ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation is driven by its successful track record. Since launching its first natural gas fleet back in 2010, PTI has accrued over 87 million miles driven on natural gas, catering to a diverse array of industries, including consumer packaged goods and manufacturing. Tyler Ellison, CEO of PTI, expressed pride in supporting Graphic Packaging’s sustainability objectives with RNG-powered vehicles that deliver performance while reducing emissions.
The Role of Clean Energy
Crucial to this initiative is Clean Energy, the provider of the RNG fuel utilized in these operations. RNG represents a powerful tool in the quest for freight decarbonization. Its lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions can be up to 90% lower than those of diesel, and when sourced appropriately, it can even achieve negative carbon intensity. This not only means fewer emissions but also greater stability in fuel pricing compared to diesel.
Tom Driscoll, Senior Vice President at Clean Energy, stated, “We’re excited to work alongside two progressive companies. By utilizing RNG, Graphic Packaging is making immediate and affordable strides toward carbon reduction.” He added that paired with Cummins’ X15N engines, the RNG-powered fleet can perform at a level comparable to traditional diesel fleets, but with a significantly cleaner output.
A Look Towards the Future
Graphic Packaging stands as a leader in the consumer packaging industry, predominantly focusing on renewable or recycled materials in its offerings. Their overarching aim is to minimize the ecological impact of packaging solutions across various consumer sectors. This collaborative effort with PTI signifies a step forward in improving capacity while upholding sustainable ideals throughout the supply chain.
The future of sustainable transportation seems bright, as PTI continues to explore innovative approaches to further integrate alternative fuels into their operations. Their leadership not only inspires industry change but sets a precedent for how logistics and carrier partnerships can greatly enhance sustainability efforts across the board. This alliance emphasizes that with collaboration and commitment, measurable reductions in emissions and operational efficiencies can, indeed, coexist.
As the transportation sector continues to evolve, initiatives like these will undoubtedly help shape a more sustainable future. Graphic Packaging and PTI’s partnership is a textbook example of how businesses can work hand in hand, embracing innovation to produce lasting positive effects on both the operational and environmental front.
