Exploring Effective Questions for University Admissions: A Seminar Introduction

The Kawai Juku Educational Institute is hosting its second online seminar on July 10, aimed at university staff involved in admissions processes. This event will feature Professor Kouichi Sugimori, the Director of the Higher Education Promotion Center at Hokuriku University. The focus will be on the effective questions posed in application documents during comprehensive selection and school recommendation-based admissions.

In recent discussions, the importance of formulating "good questions" has surged, particularly from an educational perspective. This seminar will delve into how such questions can facilitate growth in both academic performance and students' intrinsic motivation. Professor Sugimori's extensive background in higher education research and practice equips him to provide valuable insights into how universities can craft inquiries that truly assess prospective students' capabilities and aspirations.

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) recently released the guidelines for the University Entrance Selection for the year 2028. These new directives underscore the necessity of implementing a multi-faceted and thorough evaluation system, especially in comprehensive and school recommendation-based admissions processes. This seminar offers attendees an exceptional opportunity to gain insights on framing impactful questions that enhance students' learning experiences post-admission.

As part of the seminar, Professor Sugimori will share findings from his research, alongside practical examples, to illustrate the effective formulation and assessment of candidates' inquiries. Essential topics will encompass how admissions questions can not only evaluate academic abilities but also gauge a student's motivation for learning.

Furthermore, the session will address the recently mandated requirements by MEXT, which stipulate that applicants must undergo at least one additional assessment method—such as essays, interviews, or practical examinations—alongside their submitted documents. Understanding how to navigate this new landscape of admissions will be crucial for participants seeking to align with national evaluation standards.
