Experience Upcycling at Meguro River Illumination 2025 Event

Join the Meguro River Illumination 2025

Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, is participating in the Meguro River Illumination 2025 event to promote awareness of recycling and resource circulation. On December 5, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM, the company will set up an upcycling experience booth to allow participants to engage actively in sustainable actions. This event is particularly exciting as it features the use of the Tokan FF CUP, a food paper cup designed for upcycling, along with the initiative to collect used cooking oil for generating bio-diesel fuel for the illumination from the environment itself.

Background of the Initiative

The Meguro River Illumination aims to light up the entire area with environmentally friendly bio-diesel made from recycling used cooking oil sourced from local restaurants and households. The goal is to create a 100% self-sustaining event, relying entirely on local resources. Toyo Seikan Group has been supporting this initiative by providing used cooking oil collected from its employee cafeteria and is thrilled to expand the engagement by hosting the upcycling booth.

Details of the Upcycling Experience Booth

The upcycling booth will operate in the “Everyone’s Upcycle Spot” area within the event site at Gotanda Fureai Waterfront Park (Shinagawa-ku) on December 5. Visitors will be able to purchase food served in the Tokan FF CUP from the food trucks, which boasts an innovative design allowing the inner film to be detached after use for easy recycling. Guests will be encouraged to bring their used Tokan FF CUP to the booth and experience the new action of “remove, and dispose” with no mess. As a token of appreciation for their participation, attendees will receive an eco-friendly original memo pad made from recycled paper.

The paper cups collected will be sent to the paper company for conversion into new products like paper cups and toilet paper, thus contributing to reducing environmental burdens.

Tokan FF CUP Explained

Developed by Tōkan Kōgyō, a subsidiary of Toyo Seikan, the Tokan FF CUP is an innovative food paper cup designed environmentally. The cup's unique feature includes a film lining on the inside that allows for contamination-free disposal. Traditionally paper cups were not suitable for paper recycling due to their laminated surfaces. However, the Tokan FF CUP provides a breakthrough by allowing the inner film to be easily removed after use, ensuring that the base paper remains uncontaminated for quality recycling.
