Unveiling the Flavors of Calrose Rice
California rice, particularly the Calrose variety, recently made a significant mark at the
American Food Fair held in Hiroshima from
June 18 to 20, 2025. Hosted at
Kamiyamacho Shareo Central Square, this event attracted about
7,200 visitors, eager to explore the diverse culinary offerings from the United States.
A Flavorful Experience
The
USA Rice Federation set up a booth to introduce the unique characteristics of Calrose. Many attendees, including those who had previously heard about Calrose but never tasted it, were curious to try it during the fair. Over
300 visitors sampled the rice, and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Comments such as, “It’s light and delicious” and “It doesn’t feel much different from the rice I usually eat” were common, demonstrating the appeal of Calrose rice.
In addition to rice tastings,
Mitsuwa Rice Co., based in Kanagawa, showcased its unique
Yusen Mai (boiled rice) made from Calrose. This product generated significant interest, especially for its convenience during emergency preparedness and outdoor cooking.
Versatility of Calrose Rice
Calrose rice's adaptability makes it perfect for various cooking styles. It complements many ingredients and is equally good as plain rice or in dishes like curries and soups. This makes it an ideal choice for enriching meals during emergencies, providing a delicious option in difficult times. The event served as an excellent opportunity for attendees to discover the practical and delightful aspects of Calrose rice.
Supporting Fukuoka Triathlon 2025
In another exciting endeavor, the USA Rice Federation also sponsored the
Fukuoka Triathlon 2025, held on
June 22 at Shikanoshima Island. This annual event, now in its fifth year, brought together over
400 participants along with organizers and supporters. At the triathlon,
Nihon Brice Co., based in Fukuoka, and Marukake from Kumamoto distributed around
550 frozen rice balls made using Calrose rice which can be enjoyed immediately after natural thawing.
Athletes praised the rice balls, stating, “I tried it for the first time and it was delicious” and “It’s a great way to replenish energy easily.” Given that rice balls are increasingly recognized as an efficient means of nutrition among athletes, Calrose rice’s versatility is anticipated to elevate its role in sports and outdoor activities further.
Culinary Exploration at ASOBO!sai
On the same day, an engaging culinary experience was hosted at
ASOBO!sai, a family-friendly event combining sports and disaster preparedness activities at
Harumi Wharf Park in Tokyo. USA Rice set up a booth where participants could experience a disaster-ready menu using Calrose rice. The
Clam Chowder Rice was prepared by simply adding Calrose and milk into a bag and heating it. This demonstration highlighted the rice's suitability for quick cooking and showcased its appealing taste.
