Shinjuku Mirai Expo 2026: Educating Young Minds on Plastics
On June 29, 2026, the Pal System Co-operative Association participated in the Shinjuku Mirai Expo 2026, held at the Sakurabiruin University Shinjuku Campus. This exciting event focused on teaching children about plastic and its environmental implications. The initiative aimed to encourage young minds to contemplate the consequences of plastic pollution in their daily lives.
At the Pal System booth, attendees interacted with various types of plastics that are commonly found in everyday life. Through engaging quizzes, children learned about the unique characteristics of plastic and its indispensable role in our lifestyles. However, the exhibit also illustrated the darker side of plastic use, namely how littering and improper disposal could lead to hazardous waste entering the oceans, thus affecting countless marine creatures.
One of the highlights of the event was a practical demonstration using sand gathered from coastlines, where children embarked on a treasure hunt to identify microplastics that were crushed down to the size of sand grains. It was a shocking realization for many as they recognized that simple items, like plastic bottle caps and artificial turf, were contributing to the pollution in their oceans.
The event itself was a brainchild of the university's community volunteer group, unite, in collaboration with Waseda University's Atom Currency Planning Committee. The aspiration behind the Shinjuku Mirai Expo was to enable local children to visualize their future through hands-on experiences alongside local universities, enterprises, and organizations.
With the theme “Experiences that will be remembered for a decade,” around twenty organizations, including universities and NPOs, participated in a range of workshops, including paper airplane crafting and makeup sessions, to create fun and memorable experiences for families.
Families flocked to the sandy area, all eager to sift through for tiny pieces of plastic while learning valuable lessons about sustainability and environmental care. The event provided not only fun but also a necessary platform for awareness, making it a pivotal learning opportunity for the upcoming generation.
Pal System Co-operative Association, which operates out of the Shinjuku district, was established with a mission to promote environmentally friendly practices and facilitate community partnerships. With membership exceeding 1.77 million as of March 2026, their operations span across various prefectures, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba, striving to foster cooperative efforts toward sustainable living.
As the day concluded, the overwhelming enthusiasm from children and families reflected a budding awareness of environmental issues, specifically relating to plastics. Events like the Shinjuku Mirai Expo play a crucial role in educating young individuals, ensuring that they engage with critical topics affecting their future – ultimately shaping them into responsible and conscientious citizens.
