Techno College Students Win Gold at 90-Second Video Contest During Annual Festival

Techno College Students Shine at Film Festival

In a remarkable achievement, first-year students from the Film Media Department at Techno College have clinched the coveted Gold Award at the "Specialized School Video Festival - 90-Second Video Contest." This prestigious event was held on March 16, organized by the Tokyo Association of Specialized Schools, featuring participation from ten specialized schools across the Tokyo area.

Overview of the Festival

The Specialized School Video Festival serves as a platform where students from various specialized schools in Tokyo gather to showcase their creative talents. Students create videos around diverse themes and engage in symposiums discussing various aspects of video production. This festival offers an invaluable opportunity for students to appreciate the works created by their peers, fostering collaboration and interaction among budding filmmakers. It's also a golden chance for high school students aspiring to enter the film industry to witness the impressive projects of college students in person.

Contest Details

The primary feature of the festival – the 90-second video contest – challenged participating students with the theme "The Fear Hidden in Everyday Life (LOL)." Each school's students interpreted mundane moments as sources of humor-infused terror, showcasing their unique narratives through the art of film. On the day of the festival, the student presentations were lively and engaging, making the most of the big screen in a cinema setting.

Award-Winning Entry

The winning project, titled "No Paper," deftly captures the protagonist's mounting tension and struggles within a confined restroom space through dynamic camera work and humor. This short film presents a comical take on a familiar toilet predicament: Taro, heading for an important presentation, rushes to the restroom only to find the bidet broken and no toilet paper available. With female colleagues outside, Taro finds himself in a panic, desperately seeking a solution. The film received high praise for its humorous portrayal of everyday horrors and the protagonist's emotional journey.

Student Reaction

Aoko Shioiri, a first-year student from the Film Media Department, expressed her excitement about the recognition. "Winning this award is a tremendous joy for all 13 of us who collaborated on this project. The challenge was to convey the essence of the situation effectively within just 90 seconds by illustrating multiple scenarios within a single frame, exaggerating the expressions of actors to convey 'fear,' and employing innovative camera angles."

She further mentioned that attending the contest provided a valuable learning experience, as they got to see other teams that incorporated CGI and various techniques in their work. "This experience, particularly being entrusted with the role of director, has become a significant milestone in my aspiration to pursue a career in film production," Shioiri added.
