Shanghai Electric Strengthens Skills of Thar Project Employees Through an Intensive Training Program
Empowering Local Talent: Shanghai Electric's Upskilling Initiative
In a significant move towards enhancing the skills of its workforce, Shanghai Electric has successfully wrapped up an eight-day intensive training program aimed at employees involved in the Thar Coalfield Block I Energy Integration Project in Pakistan. The initiative underscores Shanghai Electric's commitment to fostering local talent and contributing to the sustainable development of the energy sector in Pakistan.
The program, held in Shanghai and Beijing, China, saw the participation of 20 employees from various managerial and technical roles within the project. These individuals underwent hands-on training supplemented with insights into the latest advancements in energy technology and industrial development. This training not only aimed to elevate their technical capabilities but also sought to immerse them in the corporate culture of Shanghai Electric.
Training Highlights
Participants engaged in various activities tailored to enrich their understanding and skills. This included attending in-depth seminars focused on Shanghai Electric's cutting-edge technologies and its corporate ethos. Notably, the training incorporated visits to the Shanghai Boiler Works production facility, allowing participants to observe effective manufacturing processes in action. Additionally, a tour of Shanghai Electric's headquarters provided them with a closer look at the company’s vision: "Create Our Future Together."
Zia ul Qama, the Manager of Commercial Operations at the Thar Project, expressed his gratitude for the experience. He noted, "It was an enriching experience to closely observe the rich culture of China and learn more about Shanghai Electric's operations. This program has inspired me to work harder toward achieving the company's goals and my personal learning aspirations."
The Thar Coalfield's Importance
The Thar Coalfield Block I Energy Integration Project, which became operational in February 2023, is pivotal in addressing Pakistan's surging energy needs. It boasts an annual output capacity of 9 billion kilowatt-hours, enough to power nearly 4 million households. However, Shanghai Electric aims to achieve more than just energy provision through this project. It represents a broader commitment to sustainable growth and social responsibility.
An integral part of the company’s efforts to promote inclusivity is its targeted initiatives aimed at increasing opportunities for women within the workforce. In recognition of these efforts, Shanghai Electric received the prestigious Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Award in 2023, an accolade conferred by the Employers' Federation of Pakistan in collaboration with the International Labour Organization.
Recognition for Sustainability Efforts
In alignment with corporate social responsibility, Shanghai Electric’s sustainability initiatives have also garnered accolades. The company was recognized as a Contributor to Shared Prosperity at the 16th Annual CSR Summit held in August 2023, marking a notable milestone coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Through these multifaceted training and empowerment programs, Shanghai Electric is not just enhancing the skills of its employees; it is investing in the future of Pakistan's energy sector, paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive industrial landscape. The successful completion of this upskilling initiative is a testament to Shanghai Electric's unwavering commitment to creating a brighter future for both its employees and the communities they serve.
