TRC Companies, Inc., a respected leader in professional services specializing in integrated strategy, consulting, engineering, and applied technologies, recently garnered significant recognition from the Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ). The firm was awarded for its exemplary contributions towards greenhouse gas mitigation and low-carbon energy solutions through two remarkable projects that demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Maryland Offshore Wind Project
One of the award-winning projects is TRC's involvement with the Maryland Offshore Wind initiative, where they served as the lead environmental consultant for US Wind Inc. TRC's responsibilities encompassed comprehensive planning and management tasks, including overseeing federal and state permitting processes and crafting the crucial Construction and Operations Plan (COP). Their extensive research efforts included conducting marine surveys assessing the benthic community and shellfish density, as well as performing visual simulations and a visual impact assessment to ensure the project aligned with environmental standards.
Located 9 nautical miles offshore of Maryland and Delaware, this offshore wind project marks the nation's 10th commercial-scale development to receive COP approval. It's anticipated to produce over 2 gigawatts of clean energy, which is sufficient to power approximately 718,000 homes. More impressively, the project is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from regional energy generation by up to 139 million tons throughout its operational lifespan. Aside from its environmental benefits, this initiative is expected to create around 2,680 jobs annually during its development and construction phases, providing a significant boost to local economies.
Waste-to-Energy Renewable Hydrogen Project
Another commendable initiative recognized by CCBJ is TRC's commitment to a waste-to-energy project for the City of Pittsburg, California. This innovative project focuses on transforming municipal waste into hydrogen fuel, representing a forward-thinking approach to energy production. TRC played an essential role by providing technical studies to facilitate the project’s development and design, while also supporting the City with the publication of the draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) under the stringent guidelines of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
By converting waste into fuel, this project not only addresses the pressing issue of waste disposal but also aims to decrease greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Additionally, it holds the potential to generate employment opportunities in the economically challenged areas surrounding San Francisco Bay. TRC’s completion of the Final EIR in January 2025 is a significant step towards the successful realization of this sustainable energy project.
Recognition and Impact
The accolades from the 2024 EBJ CCBJ awards were presented at the EBJ Business Achievement Awards banquet, coinciding with the Environmental Industry Summit XXIII from April 2-4, 2025, in San Diego. TRC's recognition at this prestigious event underscores the firm’s dedication to addressing climate change through innovative solutions and highlights the importance of collaboration in the renewable energy sector.
