Discover Unique Sensory Experiences at Sunshine Aquarium!

From April 10 to June 7, 2026, the Sunshine Aquarium in Ikebukuro, Tokyo will host the much-anticipated "World Penguin and Otter Days 2026" event, dedicated to celebrating the charm of penguins and otters while raising awareness about their conservation status. This year promises not only to enhance our understanding of these captivating creatures but also to provide unique sensory experiences for visitors.

Event Overview

The event will feature two themed sections: the "World Penguin Day" from April 10 to May 7, and the "World Otter Day" from May 8 to June 7. The calendar dates coincide with significant global awareness days, including World Penguin Day on April 25 and World Otter Day on May 27.

Exploring Penguin Challenges

During the Penguin-themed segment, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the alarming plight of the endangered African penguin. This will include informative panels discussing the current challenges facing the species, authentic penguin egg specimens, and diorama displays that replicate their natural nests. One of the highlights for sensory exploration will be the debut of the "Penguin Smell Experience Device," allowing guests to catch a whiff of penguin scent, making it a thrilling addition to this event.

Delving into Otter Issues

The World Otter Day segment will focus on the various ecological threats affecting wild otters. Alongside insightful displays showcasing their biology and habitat challenges, the popular "Otter Smell Experience Box" will return, upgraded to enable visitors to differentiate the scents of various otters through a smell identification challenge. This year offers a fresher experience with morning-processed blankets each day! Additionally, in recognition of World Sea Lion Day on May 30, there will be exhibits regarding the challenges sea lions face in their natural environments.

Daily Performances and Special Tours

Throughout this enthralling event, daily feeding shows will be executed with a special twist, enhancing the usual presentations to align with the themes of Penguin and Otter Days. Attendees can also partake in guided backstage tours (for a fee), focusing on the lives of these animals in the aquarium’s care, providing behind-the-scenes insights.

Adding to the excitement, workshops titled "Ikimono Campus" will occur on specific days in collaboration with the organization ShoeZ, renowned for their environmental education initiatives. During these intimate sessions, the aquarium will open its doors early to allow participants to learn more about penguins and otters directly from the dedicated staff.

Engaging Talks and Exclusive Merchandise

For the first time, the event will host "Pen-Kawa Talks," a paid discussion involving staff from various animal care facilities and representatives from ShoeZ, diving deep into the joys and challenges of caring for penguins and otters.

Visitors will also have opportunities to purchase exclusive merchandise designed to support these animal protection efforts, with proceeds benefiting conservation charities. Fun items include cute souvenirs and eco-friendly products!

The Path to Conservation Awareness

The theme of the event transcends mere learning; it aims to inspire guests to consider their roles in conservation. By engaging the senses through sights, sounds, and scents, alongside educational components and experiences, visitors can leave with a renewed understanding of their impact on wildlife.
