Prosecco DOC Soars in 2024
As we reflect on 2024, it's clear that the Prosecco DOC category has experienced another remarkable year, particularly within the US market. The appeal of this sparkling wine continues to grow, showcasing impressive performance metrics that are worth examining.
Throughout the year, over 9.8 million 9-liter cases of Prosecco DOC were imported into the United States by October, reflecting a
17% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023. This substantial growth solidifies the United States' status as the top export market for Prosecco DOC, comprising
23% of total exports.
On a global scale, bottling figures reached an astonishing
660 million bottles, which marks a
7% hike over 2023 and contributes to an estimated market value of
3.6 billion euros. Notably, Prosecco DOC is now responsible for nearly
25% of Italy's total PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) wine production.
The Rise of Prosecco DOC Rosé
The Prosecco DOC Rosé category is also noteworthy, with about
60 million bottles sold over the year, signifying a remarkable growth of over
20% compared to 2023. This sparkling variant now accounts for approximately
10% of total sales, confirming initial projections regarding its potential in the market.
Looking to the Future
As we step into 2025, the Consorzio Prosecco DOC expresses unwavering commitment to further solidifying its position as America's favorite sparkling wine. A blend of quality control and market development initiatives is key to driving both Prosecco DOC and the broader Italian wine category. One significant event on the horizon is the
National Prosecco Week, slated for
June 2-8, 2025.
“Despite challenges faced throughout the broader wine industry, 2024 has proven to be a robust year for the Prosecco DOC Consortium,” states
Giancarlo Guidolin, President of Consorzio Prosecco DOC. “Our continued success is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved — from producers to consumers. As we move ahead, we aim to resonate more deeply with modern consumers, ensuring that Prosecco DOC remains a symbol of connection and shared moments of joy.”
Prosecco DOC's achievements speak volumes about its lasting allure and its essential role in the evolving global wine landscape. The commitment to quality, sustainability, and authentic connections puts Prosecco DOC in a prime position to adapt to shifting consumer preferences and reinforce its leadership in the category of Italian sparkling wines.
About Prosecco DOC
Prosecco DOC wines are produced in several varieties, including
Spumante (sparkling),
Frizzante (semi-sparkling), and
Tranquillo (still) styles. Primarily made from the
Glera grape, these wines may also include a blend of up to
15% of other approved varieties. The Prosecco Frizzante and Spumante utilize a method known as Secondary Fermentation to create their characteristic bubbles, leading to a beautiful straw-yellow wine with delicate aromas of white flowers, apple, and pear.
Since August 2020, the introduction of Prosecco DOC Rosé has gained traction, comprising at least
85% Glera and
10-15% Pinot Nero, exclusively in the sparkling version. This rosé undergoes a longer fermentation period, ultimately resulting in a charming pale pink hue with notes of white flowers and delicate fruit.
