Innovative Sensing Device Revolutionizes Baby Feeding Techniques with Award-Winning Technology

Award-Winning Breastfeeding Sensing Device by Sumitomo Bakelite

In a groundbreaking development in infant care, Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has announced that its breastfeeding sensing device has won the top prize in the Feeding and Nursing category at the BabyTech® Awards 2025-26, organized by the BabyTech® Awards Executive Committee.

The innovative device was created in collaboration with Associate Professor Eri Nishi from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Setsunan University. This state-of-the-art technology measures the movement of an infant's tongue and objectively quantifies the strength of their suckling, known as “suction power.” This crucial information allows mothers to scientifically understand their baby’s ability to nurse, significantly reducing anxiety during initial feeding experiences.

In addition to the sensing device, a dedicated PC software has been developed to integrate the measurement results with a nursing checklist filled out by mothers and midwives. This software comprehensively visualizes various nursing indicators, empowering midwives to provide more precise guidance for breastfeeding, thus presenting a holistic solution toward better maternal and infant health.

Under the supervision of Takashi Arimitsu, a senior lecturer at Keio University School of Medicine, and Professor Satoshi Narumi, a survey was conducted to evaluate the impact of this device on breastfeeding guidance. The findings revealed that the use of the device led to an impressive 30% increase in mothers' confidence in breastfeeding, contributing to a decrease in parenting-related anxiety and enhancing the psychological wellbeing of parents.

The recognition of these achievements has positioned Sumitomo Bakelite's product favorably within the esteemed BabyTech Awards, raising hopes for further advancements in breastfeeding technology. The company's commitment to improving the quality of breastfeeding guidance reinforces its mission to support healthy parenting for families around the world.
