In the past, science fiction was closely associated with classic works from Europe and America, such as Star Wars, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Journey to the Center of the Earth. However, this narrative shifted dramatically with the groundbreaking accomplishments of Chinese author Liu Cixin. Notably, his novel, The Three-Body Problem, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015, making Liu the first Asian author to receive this prestigious recognition. This distinction catapulted Chinese science fiction into the global spotlight.
In 2023, Chengdu played host to the 81st World Science Fiction Convention, marking a significant milestone as it was the first time this major event was held in China and only the second time in Asia. The convention attracted fans, authors, and industry professionals from around the world, reaffirming Chengdu's burgeoning status in the sci-fi landscape. Liu Cixin's first book was initially serialized in Science Fiction World, a local magazine, which speaks to the city’s historic significance in this genre.
To further promote the sci-fi industry in Chengdu, the Chengdu International Sci-Fi Industry Salon was held on May 28, 2025. Organized by National Business Daily and supported by NBD Think Tank, the event gathered major companies and global sci-fi experts to discuss the industry's future. Notable attendees included representatives from the French publishing group Hachette and the Japanese animation studio D'Art Shtajio, known for leading innovation in anime production.
During the salon, discussions revolved around topics such as the development of sci-fi intellectual property, copyright management, and collaborative animation production. The insights shared highlighted the growing importance of creating ideal environments for sci-fi innovation and fostering cross-border collaborations in the industry.
The event saw contributions from several renowned international experts, including Brigitte Leblanc, chief editor of Le Rayon imaginaire, and Dalton Grant, a U.S. animation director recognized for his work on films like Cars and Shrek. These professionals emphasized how science fiction could ignite unexpected creativity and push boundaries, spotlighting the success of The Three-Body Problem as a model for international cooperation in intellectual property.
The organizers of the Salon aim to enhance the diversity, depth, and global integration of Chengdu's sci-fi industry. This initiative not only broadens the reach of Chinese sci-fi works abroad but also encourages cultural exchange between China and the world.
