From March 27 to April 5, 2026, the historic Kabukiza Theatre in Tokyo will host a remarkable projection mapping event titled "Edo Hidden Street Projection: Wandering the Hidden Street of Kabukiza." This event aims to revive the rich cultural and historical ambiance of the Edo period through artistic displays on the walls of the theater. In collaboration with the Higashi-Ginza Area Management Association, this event promises to be a visual feast for all attendees.

A Glimpse Into History

Located in what is now Higashi-Ginza, the area was once known as Kobiki-cho, a district bustling with lumber workers during the Edo period, as they were commissioned to work on the expansion of Edo Castle. Only officially sanctioned theaters could showcase Kabuki performances, and the area became home to one of the three major Kabuki houses, Morita-za, as well as many smaller theaters. This rich theatrical history will come alive as the projections capture both the artistry and daily life of Edo's residents.

The Magic of Projection Mapping

This event harnesses cutting-edge projection mapping technology, utilizing representations from the Shochiku Otani Library's collection, including iconic scenes from performances like "Shakkyō." The carefully crafted pieces, known as "Kumiawase Tōrō-e" (assembled lantern pictures), will animate historical characters and scenes. Participants can expect dramatic displays featuring original characters based on traditional motifs, such as mythical cats and lumber workers, that invite spectators into the hidden alleyways of Edo.

Special Large Projection for Three Days Only

During the inaugural three days of the event, from March 27 to 29, the area will be transformed into a pedestrian paradise, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the dynamic projection mapping displayed on two expansive walls of Kabukiza. Expect a breathtaking visual experience that promises to be both captivating and deeply educational.

Exciting Events Alongside the Projection

In addition to the main projection, the "Edo Hidden Street Market" will take place concurrently, offering visitors a chance to savor local delicacies like Kabuki soba, honey produced in Ginza, and select fine sake. Other family-friendly activities include workshops where participants can dress as samurai or ninjas, immersing themselves further into Edo culture. Guided exploration tours wearing traditional kimono will be available for international tourists, amplifying the cultural experience.

Event Commemorative Projects

To enhance the experience, a stamp rally will encourage visitors to explore the area for rewards at local businesses, while a lottery event featuring grand prizes will take place. Individuals can earn raffle tickets for every 1,000 yen spent at the Edo Hidden Street Market, offering a chance to win exciting prizes and coupons.
