Tokyo University of Electro-Communications Collaborates on Night Zoo Event with Saitama Children's Animal Park

Tokyo University of Electro-Communications Partners with Saitama Children's Animal Park for Night Zoo Event

The Tokyo University of Electro-Communications (TU-EC), led by President Tadahiko Ibamoto, is set to collaborate with the Saitama Children's Animal Park (Director Sachiko Noguchi) for an upcoming event called the "Night Zoo," scheduled to occur in September. This event aims to create an extraordinary experience for visitors by integrating illumination displays, live performances, and various interactive activities, marking the beginning of this partnership that started in 2024.

Prof. Yuichiro Katsumoto from the Department of Information Systems Design within the Faculty of Engineering is facilitating this initiative as part of a practical learning opportunity for students. By collaborating with a local facility, students are actively engaging in the creation of an event that merges educational principles with community involvement. Their goal is to maximize the unique characteristics of a zoo as a space and provide new discoveries and delights for those visiting the Night Zoo during nighttime hours.

Interactive Learning through Community Involvement

One of the standout features of this collaboration is the hands-on experience that seven students from TU-EC will gain by being involved in every phase of the illumination project, from planning and production to performance and maintenance. The interactive content produced by these students is primarily divided into two significant elements:

1. Illuminations that Sculpt Silhouettes: As visitors move throughout the zoo, various silhouettes of animals will emerge and glow, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

2. Gesture-Based Interactive Experiences: Using projectors, images of animals will appear on screens in response to visitor gestures, allowing guests to feel as though they are interacting with the creatures presented.

In their planning and production, the students are contemplating issues such as:
  • - How to design nighttime experiences that allow visitors to appreciate the zoo's charm without disrupting wildlife observation.
  • - The strategic placement of lights and events to ensure that guests enjoy the space while exploring the zoo.

This process enables the students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts while addressing challenges they encounter in the field. They will develop practical skills that equip them to tackle issues they may face in future careers.

Commitment to Community and Practical Education

TU-EC is committed to fostering technological skills that contribute to society and solving local challenges. The university intends to create more opportunities for students to confront real-world issues, encouraging proactive thinking and engagement in practical applications.

Previous Events and Success

The upcoming Night Zoo event will expand on the prior successful gatherings, where previously attendees have enjoyed captivating displays such as sloths passing overhead and impressive giant lanterns depicting animals like the naked mole rat.
