However, a recent report by Forval GDX Research Institute sheds light on the disconnect between understanding DX and the ability to explain or implement it effectively in these companies.

Understanding the Current Awareness of DX



According to the report, approximately 60.8% of SMEs acknowledge the concept of DX. This figure combines those who know about DX yet cannot explain it (43.7%) with those who can articulate it clearly (17.1%). While this signifies a level of awareness, it also highlights a gap in comprehensive understanding.

Compared to the previous year, these numbers have barely shifted, with 44.0% knowing without understanding deeply and 19.3% being able to explain it. This consistency suggests that while the term DX has circulated widely, its depth of understanding among SMEs still requires development.

Progress in DX Implementation



Of the SMEs surveyed, 63.0% reported actively engaging in some form of DX implementation. The study categorized these efforts into three key steps:
1. Awareness Reform: Leading initiatives to promote digitalization (36.3%).
2. Information Utilization: Leveraging data acquired through digitalization (21.2%).
3. Business Reform: Overhauling business strategies and generating new ventures (5.5%).

The overarching trend indicates that while more than half of SMEs are taking initial steps towards DX, the commitment remains variable across the identified stages, with a fair number still not engaging in any aspect of digital transformation.

Future Commitment towards DX



Encouragingly, 83.1% of SMEs expressed their intent to continue prioritizing DX efforts. When asked about future plans, 11.2% indicated they would focus significantly on advancing their DX initiatives, 37.3% slightly, and 34.6% plan to sustain their current efforts. This overwhelming majority demonstrates a readiness to embrace ongoing transformation despite previous challenges.

While the findings reveal that awareness and implementation of DX in Japanese SMEs remain relatively stagnant when comparing to last year, they also suggest potential for growth. Many of these enterprises face unique challenges, including limited resources, expertise gaps, and financial constraints, which can hinder progress.
