Celebrating 20 Years of ASES: A Bright Future for California Students
On October 23, 2026, Think Together, part of Think Education, held a monumental event marking the 20th anniversary of California's After School Education and Safety (ASES) grant. This celebration, known as Lights On Afterschool, brought together educators, school district leaders, elected officials, and community partners at over 450 school sites across California to highlight the importance and impact of expanded learning opportunities for students.
The theme for this year's celebrations was "Partnering for Better Futures," emphasizing the collaborative efforts of schools, districts, educators, families, and community partners. The events aimed to showcase how these collaborations enrich students' educational experiences beyond the traditional school day, creating a brighter future for the youth involved.
Randy Barth, Founder and CEO of Think Education, expressed his admiration for the dedication shown by school partners and communities during Lights On Afterschool. Barth noted, "Every year, I'm so impressed by the commitment our school partners and communities bring to Lights On Afterschool. It’s exciting to see these celebrations grow year after year, alongside the impact of our work with school systems across California. Together, we're helping hundreds of thousands of students access opportunities to build skills beyond the traditional school day."
Throughout the celebrations, numerous spotlight events took place. At Vineland Elementary School in Baldwin Park, local educators and officials joined students, community members, and school staff to recognize the significance of expanded learning. In the Inland Empire, Rialto Unified School District held a food festival entitled "No Matter Where You're From, You Belong Here," which celebrated unity and cultural connection.
Think Together also organized a vibrant science and literacy-themed mystery event, "Welcome to Wonderland," at Mission Crest Elementary in Hesperia. Here, students engaged in hands-on activities that made learning interactive and enjoyable. At Ledesma Elementary in the Bay Area, families participated in an art event celebrating creativity and community engagement, indicative of the diverse festivities held around California.
Adding to the widespread celebrations, Think Together hosted a virtual Lights On Afterschool broadcast that extended the impact of the events beyond school grounds. The virtual event attracted around 1,000 viewers, highlighting vital partnerships between public leaders, school districts, and communities that promote student success. Featured in the broadcast were prominent figures such as State Senator Dave Cortese, Assemblymember Mike Gipson, and voices from parents and students highlighting the value of the programs.
Tommy Brewer II, Senior Vice President of Partner Success and Innovation at Think Together, expressed gratitude for the partnership among elected leaders and school communities in expanding opportunities for students. "For 20 years, ASES has helped school districts provide resources and experiences that enhance learning outside the regular classroom setting," Brewer remarked.
Since its inception nearly three decades ago, Think Together has championed educational solutions that transform the futures of students across California. The organization partners with school districts to create opportunities beyond the classroom environment, focusing on the holistic development of students. Through its diverse program offerings, including afterschool programs and early learning initiatives, Think Together continues to embody its commitment to educational equity and excellence.
