Singapore and Malaysia Achieve Top Rankings in Latest AppliedEdu ASEAN University Rankings

Overview of the 2027 AppliedEdu Rankings

The latest AppliedEdu University Rankings for ASEAN have been released, highlighting Singapore and Malaysia as the leading nations in higher education. The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been recognized as the top public university for the third consecutive year, while Sunway University maintains its position as the premier private university in the region for the fourth consecutive year.

In total, Malaysia boasts seven out of the top ten private university positions and five among the public, showcasing its dominance in the education sector. Notably, Malaysia has more institutions listed among the top 50, with 21 private and 16 public universities, which is more than any other country analyzed.

Methodology of the Rankings

The 2027 edition presents the most comprehensive evaluation of higher education in Southeast Asia conducted by AppliedEdu to date. A staggering 316 universities from nine ASEAN countries participated in the rankings, a significant increase from 237 institutions the previous year. The assessment relied on over 100,000 validated responses collected from student surveys, alongside nominations from academic peers and verified institutional data.

The results were announced during the AppliedEduXChange 2026, a significant event that attracted more than 150 university leaders. The theme, “Beyond Skills Building Employable, Industry-Ready Graduates”, emphasizes the commitment of universities to produce graduates ready for the labor market.

According to Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University: “Being recognized as the leading private university in the ASEAN region for the fourth consecutive time is a proud moment for the Sunway University and Malaysia.” He elaborated that the goal is equipping graduates with the knowledge, confidence, and experience necessary for building meaningful careers that positively impact society, embodying their vision of being a mission-driven 5th generation university.

Significance of Teaching and Learning

The AppliedEdu rankings particularly focus on teaching and learning, which accounts for 40% of the total evaluation. The employability aspect holds 20% for private universities and 15% for public universities, making teaching quality and student outcomes pivotal to the ranking system. Further evaluations include students’ insights into teaching, facilities, and campus life, reflecting their experiences.

Universities are assessed separately for public and private institutions, adopting different weighting systems to accurately reflect their unique roles. Other factors, such as research, institutional reputation, community engagement, and internationalization, complete the assessment, acknowledging the diverse contributions universities make towards students and society.

Mandy Mok, the Founder and CEO of AppliedEdu, stated: “Rankings should do more than just recognize achievements; they should inspire improvements. They should help universities capitalize on strengths and identify areas for necessary change to achieve better outcomes for students and the communities they serve.”
