Collaboration to Transform Waste into Hydrogen Energy
Daito Kentaku Co., Ltd., based in Minato-ku, Tokyo and led by CEO Kei Takeuchi, has announced a strategic partnership with BIOTECHWORKS-H2, a company specializing in converting waste into hydrogen energy. This collaboration aims to commence in May 2026 under the Tokyo government's initiative, which supports matching Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) with startups.
BIOTECHWORKS-H2, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo and led by CEO Akihide Nishikawa, has developed innovative technology that allows for the conversion of waste into hydrogen energy without incineration. As part of the collaboration, Daito Kentaku will provide a wide range of operational sites in Tokyo for practical demonstrations of this technology.
Project Overview
The first phase of the partnership will involve an extensive nine-month demonstration project starting in May 2026. During this period, Daito Kentaku will assist by supplying industrial waste generated from its eight branches in Tokyo. In collaboration with BIOTECHWORKS-H2, they will conduct feasibility studies, composition analyses, and experiments to verify the transformation of waste into hydrogen energy. This effort aims to build an effective circular model that contributes to waste management and energy production.
Urban centers like Tokyo currently face significant challenges associated with the disposal of "mixed waste" that cannot be easily recycled and is often incinerated. The shortage of final disposal sites poses serious issues. To tackle these problems and move towards a sustainable future, it is essential to promote resource utilization without relying on incineration and spread the use of hydrogen as a next-generation energy source.
Embracing Sustainable Practices
In alignment with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's goal of achieving a “Zero Emission Tokyo” by 2050, this collaboration is not just about managing waste; it is fundamentally about reducing CO2 emissions (addressing Scope 3) and curbing future waste treatment costs. Daito Kentaku envisions transforming their managed properties into “energy production hubs” that generate hydrogen and eventually return to the local community, thus aiming to create a circular resource society.
This partnership underscores a commitment to innovative solutions in waste management and energy production while supporting local sustainability efforts. Both companies are determined to explore how the generated hydrogen can be utilized for community benefits, making a significant impact on the overall ecosystem and contributing to a greener future.
