Collaborative MOU for Tug Services in India
In a significant development for the maritime industry, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), led by President Tsuyoshi Hashimoto, has formally signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), headed by Managing Director Binesh Kumar Tyagi. The signing took place during the India Maritime Week 2025, held from October 27 for five days in Mumbai. The event gathered key stakeholders in the maritime sector, with the signing ceremony attended by notable figures including Mr. Vikram Dingley, Director of SCI, and Capt. Ashwini, Head of Department at SCI.
The collaboration intends to pave the way for robust tugboat operations within India's rapidly growing economy. The anticipated growth in container handling is projected to rise between 6% to 8% annually over the next decade, and energy-related cargo is expected to grow by 3% to 5% annually. With these increases, it is clear that the number of vessels entering and leaving major Indian ports will rise, necessitating reliable and safe towage services to facilitate ship movements.
To further this initiative, the Government of India is actively promoting the Green Tug Transition Program, aiming to convert all operational tugs at key ports to environmentally friendly 'Green Tugs' by 2040. This transition marks a significant turning point for the towage industry, driven by the demand for sustainable practices in maritime operations. With the expansion of tugboat services in India, the emphasis will also be on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in port operations.
MOL has an established track record of providing towage services in regions such as Japan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, focusing on ensuring safe entries and exits of vessels in these areas. This new partnership with SCI allows MOL to leverage its extensive knowledge and technology in safe operations and alternative fuel vessels, integrating them with SCI's local network and expertise.
The MOU underscores the dedication of both companies to expanding their towage operations in India, responding to industry needs, and helping to establish a more environmentally responsible maritime sector. By uniting their strengths, MOL and SCI aim to enhance the safety and efficiency of marine operations in India, contributing to the country's economic growth while also being mindful of the environmental implications of maritime activities.
As industry players navigate the challenges of the tugboat sector and environmental mandates, this collaboration represents a forward-looking approach to maritime services in India. Both companies are set to work closely, ensuring that tug services not only meet the increasing demand but also align with global sustainability targets. The partnership signifies an exciting phase for the maritime community in India as it gears up for a greener future.
With the India Maritime Week 2025 serving as a platform for innovation and collaboration in the maritime field, the MOU stands as a testament to the potential for positive change driven by strategic alliances in the shipping industry. As initiatives like the Green Tug Transition Program gain momentum, the focus will remain on sustainability and enhanced operational capabilities, crucial for the growing maritime landscape in India.
