Exploring Contemporary Food Representations in Art at ADF Vol. 43: 'Generic Foods'

ADF Art Gallery Project Vol. 43: 'Generic Foods'

The ADF (Aoyama Design Forum) is set to showcase its 43rd Art Gallery Project, an exciting group exhibition titled 'Generic Foods', featuring the works of four distinct artists: shiraki, ZENZABURO, Tamaki Miyase, and Momo Matsuno. This exhibition will run from June 5 to June 19, 2026, at the GARDE Gallery located in Minami Aoyama, Tokyo. An opening reception for the event is scheduled for June 5, 2026, from 6 PM to 8 PM, and all are invited to attend.

The theme 'Generic Foods' reflects on how food is commodified and consumed in contemporary society, highlighting issues of uniformity and authenticity in our food systems. The artists have come together to express their unique perspectives on the intricacies of food culture under the prevailing concerns of reproduction and standardization, impacting the way we perceive and interact with our meals.

Artists and Their Works

Shirley (shiraki)

Shiraki uses various forms of media to investigate the commodification of food. With installations and fashion as her primary outlets, she challenges existing values and norms surrounding culinary practices. Her piece 'Reproduction' (250×250×70 cm), crafted from Paulownia wood and beeswax, presents an artistic interrogation of how society accepts mass-produced food as a norm without questioning its origins.

ZENZABURO

A graduate of Musashino Art University, ZENZABURO characterizes his artwork as 'interior paintings.' Focusing on the psychological comfort that art can bring to daily life, his approach aims to weave art seamlessly into our surroundings. Pieces like 'Breakfast for Me' (333×242 mm) and 'Muscat and Tea Breakfast' (410×318 mm) done in acrylic paint illustrate familiar scenes drawn from everyday meals, inviting viewers to reflect on their relationships with food.

Tamaki Miyase

Currently studying information experience design at the Royal College of Art, Tamaki Miyase harnesses her background in computer science to explore how technology can intersect with our dietary habits. Her works employ responsive technology to push boundaries of wearable art, illustrating how the integration of the digital realm can lead to innovative expressions around food consumption and identity.

Momo Matsuno

Momo Matsuno, a freelance designer and artist educated at Nagoya University of Arts, centers her art on food motifs using tile works. Her creations evoke a playful interaction with the concept of food as art. Through her participation in exhibitions like 'Frame Out', and other group showcases, she continues to challenge how we perceive culinary products within artistic platforms.

Thematic Exploration

The 'Generic Foods' title highlights the pervasive nature of commodified food today, where urban dwellers encounter countless varieties of food products without understanding their production or processing histories. As much of what we consume remains anonymous, relying on the trust of unseen producers is a significant element of modern eating practices.

This exhibition transcends mere commentary; each artist humorously critiques the commodification of food, exploring the symbolism behind our relationships with what we eat. Through art, viewers are encouraged to reconsider the implications of food production, exchange, and consumption, potentially transforming mundane supermarket encounters into more meaningful reflections.

When viewing these works, one might find that their usual meals and grocery shopping are framed in a new, slightly altered light. Each piece provides an opportunity to engage with the complexities behind food choices, helping to rekindle awareness of the broader narratives surrounding our daily dietary habits.
