Strengthening Semiconductor Education Through Practical Training for Teachers in Japan
Enhancing Semiconductor Education Through Practical Training
In March 2023, KOSEN, Japan's national college of technology organization, took significant steps to improve semiconductor education by simultaneously hosting training sessions for teachers at Asahikawa and Sasebo Colleges of Technology. This initiative, part of the nationwide COMPASS 5.0 program, aimed at bridging the gap in practical hands-on experience among faculty members responsible for educating the next generation of semiconductor professionals.
The Current Educational Gap
The instructors at technical colleges have long expressed a critical concern: despite their extensive knowledge, many lack hands-on experience with manufacturing equipment. This disconnect represents a broader systemic issue within Japan's semiconductor education landscape. As research facilities in universities and companies have diminished, the number of educators with practical manufacturing experience has also declined. This has created a notable lack of practical skills imparted through curriculum, limiting the quality of education offered to students.
