Fender Unveils the James Jamerson 1962 Precision Bass®

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) has officially launched the James Jamerson 1962 Precision Bass®, a tribute model honoring the legendary bassist James Jamerson, who is celebrated for laying the groundwork for Motown sound and transforming the possibilities of the electric bass. This signature model replicates Jamerson's beloved instrument, showcasing his substantial contribution to music.

Renowned Grammy-winning artist and producer Raphael Saadiq shared his admiration, stating, "Musicians across genres from R&B to rock, jazz, country, and reggae have been profoundly influenced by James Jamerson. What he achieved with his 1962 Precision Bass was unparalleled. It’s an honor for Fender to acknowledge this iconic instrument and the legend himself."

From the 1960s through the 1970s, Jamerson was a consistent presence on both studio recordings and live performances. His true legacy lies in his ability to craft the blueprint for what bass lines should encapsulate when producing hit songs. By redefining groove, feeling, and the essence of supporting basslines in music, his performances have had an immeasurable impact on generations of bass players. Integral to this sound was his cherished Precision Bass. Its outstanding playability, refined design, and powerful low-end response made it the perfect partner for translating ideas into flawless bass lines.

The signature model fully encapsulates the allure of Jamerson’s personal Precision Bass, granting players around the globe the ability to establish their unique style and tone. Born in 1936, Jamerson was immersed in live performances through the influence of his grandmother and aunt, who played in church settings. Captivated by the energy derived from gospel and jazz, he self-taught the piano and trombone. At 18, he moved to Detroit, diving into the local club scene where he began playing upright bass.

Upon graduating high school, Jamerson toured with a local band and by 1959 had become a regular at Hitsville USA, the recording studio that birthed Motown. There, his immense talent flourished, recording bass tracks for legendary artists like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and John Lee Hooker, establishing a foundation for modern electric bass playing.

Through these stellar works, the warm and sophisticated sound of the Precision Bass remained constant, inspiring countless musicians, including Geddy Lee, Pino Palladino, John Entwistle, Raphael Saadiq, Bootsy Collins, Leland Sklar, Nate Mendel, Geezer Butler, Tal Wilkenfeld, Freddie Washington, Bob Glaub, and Matt Freeman, to pick up the bass and embark on their journeys toward greatness.

Jamerson's wife, Annie Jamerson, expressed her joy: "When James was younger, I told him, ‘You are going to be great one day.’ I am so happy to see that realization come to life. While James has received numerous accolades, this Precision Bass, a tangible tribute to his legacy, is extraordinarily special. I encourage everyone to feel his groove and keep making music. Thank you, Fender!"

The James Jamerson 1962 Precision Bass® offers a dynamic response, powerful low-end, and stylish appearance that propelled Jamerson to the pinnacle of his career. This historically accurate instrument features custom split single-coil pickups that produce rich low frequencies. At the same time, it delivers clarity and punch for bass fills, runs, and embellishments. The Heirloom sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish exudes timeless elegance, only becoming more beautiful with age, reminiscent of vintage instruments.

Moreover, with a classic “C” shape neck, slab rosewood fingerboard, and chrome-plated bridge and pickup covers, this model provides the playability and feel of instruments that once graced the live rooms of Hitsville around 1963. It allows players to connect with an important chapter in bass history and discover sounds that resonate with their hearts, much like Jamerson did nearly 70 years ago.

Justin Norvell, Fender's Chief Product Officer, remarked, "James Jamerson shaped the modern bass landscape. His 1962 Precision Bass was more than just an instrument; it embodied the heartbeat of its era. As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Precision Bass, we aspire for players from beginners to touring professionals to touch a piece of that legacy. From the heirloom nitrocellulose lacquer finish to the James Jamerson 1962 Precision Bass pickup, we meticulously crafted every detail to deliver that magic into your hands. This tribute model is our love letter to the man who made groove absolute."

As a key member of The Funk Brothers, Jamerson not only expanded the potential of the bass but also altered the course of modern music. The James Jamerson 1962 Precision Bass stands as a remarkable tribute to his great legacy, intertwining history with contemporary playing.
