Realta Fusion Chooses Wisconsin for Groundbreaking Fusion Energy Research Facility

Realta Fusion, recognized as a leader in magnetic mirror fusion energy, has recently declared its plans to establish a research and development facility in Wisconsin. This monumental decision brings extensive benefits to the state, including a substantial financial commitment of up to $55 million from both the state and the city of Madison. The facility, named "The Realta Forge," will be situated at the historic site of the former Oscar Mayer plant in Madison.

The financial incentives provided by the state include an estimated $37.5 million in sales and use tax exemptions, alongside performance-based tax credits and tax increment financing specifically aimed at job creation. This collaborative effort has been essential in Realta's decision to keep its operations within Wisconsin, showcasing the state's appealing business environment.

Kieran Furlong, the CEO of Realta Fusion, expressed excitement about the opportunity for growth in Wisconsin, stating, “We spent the better part of the past two years searching across the country to find the most favorable business environment and the most attractive site.” The detailed plan envisions the creation of over 600 jobs at the facility, which will encompass various roles, both technical and non-technical.

Madison's Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and District 12 Alder Julia Matthews advocated for the job creation tax increment financing, which significantly influenced Realta's choice of location. Realta intends to commence construction on its R&D facility, where it will develop its prototype magnetic mirror fusion machine, dubbed Hammir, later this year. The state’s Act 165, which was signed into law earlier this year, marks a historic milestone as the first legislation in the U.S. to exempt capital expenditures on fusion energy from state sales tax.
