Capture6 Unveils Project Tortuga to Combat Water Scarcity and Carbon Emissions in Australia
Capture6 Launches Project Tortuga in Western Australia
On October 13, 2026, Capture6 officially launched Project Tortuga, a groundbreaking facility located in Western Australia. This project aims to recover freshwater from brine while simultaneously capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere—addressing two critical challenges in the region, water scarcity and climate change.
The Facility and Its Operations
The Tortuga facility operates on an industrial scale, employing eight containerized units that function as a singular, integrated system. Set up in the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct near Perth, these units produce valuable data that will guide the development of Capture6's initial commercial facilities. The launch was ceremoniously marked by a ribbon-cutting event attended by various local officials, including Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Dan Bull.
Capture6's innovative approach to water recovery and carbon removal might come as a breath of fresh air to Perth's residents. In recent years, the inflow of water into the city's dams has drastically decreased, plummeting to about 76 gigaliters per year since 2010 from an average of 420 gigaliters before the mid-1970s. As a consequence, desalination now contributes to approximately half of Perth's drinking water, as noted in the Western Australia Government's
