Transforming Education in Rwanda

On October 3, 2025, Rwanda marked a significant achievement with the completion of the first phase of the Smart Education project and the launch of the DigiTruck initiative, developed by Huawei in partnership with the Rwandan Ministry of Education. These initiatives are pivotal in Rwanda’s commitment to enhancing educational quality through digital technology.

Key Milestones in Smart Education

The Smart Education project aims to elevate the educational standards across Rwanda by integrating advanced technology into classrooms. As part of its implementation, around 1,500 schools have been connected to high-speed internet, and two state-of-the-art data centers have been established. The project also lays the groundwork for an independent educational network that will support digital learning nationwide. In alignment with Rwanda's Vision 2050, these efforts are designed to transition the nation into a globally competitive knowledge-based economy.

Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, emphasized the importance of these projects during the launch event. He stated, “Today’s joint celebration is not just a formal event; it showcases Rwanda's unwavering commitment to inclusive education through technology. These initiatives strengthen international cooperation, promote digital equality, and contribute to sustainable national development.”

The introduction of smart education connects nearly 1.5 million students across the country, ensuring equitable access to quality educational resources, whether in urban areas like Kigali or remote regions. “A student in Kigali can now share knowledge with peers in Rusizi. This highlights the real impact of digital inclusion, bridging remote areas, removing barriers, and providing every child the opportunity to aim higher,” noted Jin Jiqing, General Manager of Huawei Technologies Rwanda.

Introducing DigiTruck

In tandem with the Smart Education program, Huawei also unveiled the DigiTruck project, aimed at providing free, targeted training in digital skills to disadvantaged communities, particularly out-of-school youth, girls, and farmers. The DigiTruck is a mobile classroom powered by solar energy, equipped with laptops, internet connectivity, and digital learning tools that can reach the most remote areas of Rwanda.

Eraste Rurangwa, Secretary of State at the Rwandan Ministry of ICT and Innovation, remarked, “Initiatives like the DigiTruck represent more than just technology; they are gateways to new opportunities, empowering individuals and shaping Rwanda's future as a knowledge economy.” The DigiTruck is aligned with the NST2 program's goal to train one million citizens in digital skills. In its three-year journey, the DigiTruck will visit all thirty districts of Rwanda, aiming to train 5,000 Rwandans.

Previously, Huawei's DigiTrucks have trained over 17,000 individuals across seven countries in various digital skills, including device usage, office software, online job applications, entrepreneurship, and basic programming and robotics. Through these projects, Rwanda is not only equipping its youth with vital digital skills but also fostering a progressive, inclusive educational landscape.

As Rwanda continues to push toward a comprehensive digital transformation, the success of the Smart Education project and the DigiTruck initiative will play a critical role in shaping the nation’s educational future.
