Ryuta Takahashi Collection Collaboration

From September 12, 2024, the Ryuko Memorial Museum will host the "Kawabata Ryuko Plus One" exhibition, showcasing the works of contemporary artist Rikako Kawauchi alongside the celebrated Nihonga painter Ryuko Kawabata. This unique event is a collaboration with art collector and psychiatrist Ryuta Takahashi, who is renowned for his extensive collection of contemporary Japanese art. Beginning in the 1990s, Takahashi's collection has amassed over 3,500 artworks and has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including a grand presentation titled "Japanese Contemporary Art from Ryuta Takahashi Collection" scheduled for the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2024.

The collaboration began in 2021 with the exhibition "Kawabata Ryuko vs. Ryuta Takahashi Collection", and it has gained significant attention with subsequent exhibits, including one featuring Juri Hamada and Rena Yabo. The upcoming "Kawabata Ryuko Plus One" aims to explore how contemporary artists resonate with Kawabata’s works, particularly as we approach the 60th anniversary of the artist's passing.

Rikako Kawauchi, who will present her works during the first phase of this exhibition, addresses universal themes such as food, mythology, and life through diverse materials, including wire, neon, and marble. Notably, her prominent pieces, such as "LOVE" (2024) and "The tiger jumps over a dancing pretzel" (2024), will be displayed alongside Kawabata's masterpieces like "Tiger Room" (1947) and "Wild Grape" (1933). Additionally, her works will also be exhibited in the former residence and studio of Kawabata, adding a new dimension to the artistic dialogue.

Kawauchi, born in 1990, has gained recognition for her artistic achievements, winning several prestigious awards and holding solo exhibitions in Japan and Europe. Her exploration of shared motifs between her work and that of Kawabata highlights a connection to nature and culture, aiming to foster a fresh interpretation and appreciation of Kawabata's legacy.

"By placing my works next to Kawabata’s, I hope to illuminate the similarities in expression that transcend media differences and cultural backgrounds," says Kawauchi, expressing her intentions for the exhibition. This blending of contemporary and traditional mediums offers a rich ground for dialogue, raising new perspectives on both artists' works.

The exhibition is set to feature a range of significant works from both artists and promises a dynamic interplay of art that invites visitors to experience the vibrancy and diversity of Japanese contemporary art.
