A Unique Children's Book Fair Coming to Futako Tamagawa
Starting from August 18 to August 31, 2026, Futako Tamagawa Tsutaya Electrics, located in Setagaya, Tokyo, will host a special event titled ‘Our Bookstore: Let’s Create the Ideal Bookstore I Want to Visit’. This fair offers a wonderful selection of books chosen by children who participated in a unique workshop organized in collaboration with Zurich Insurance. On July 28, thirty-six children, ranging from elementary to high school students, gathered to discover the literary world and express their ideal bookstore vision.
As societal issues surrounding children’s access to books continue to grow, this event serves not just as a book fair but as a community initiative aimed at bridging these gaps. The workshop was designed to introduce children to the art of bookselling while nurturing their love for reading. During the event, children toured the store under the guidance of Hiroki Eto, the Literature Concierge at Tsutaya Books, who shared insights about literature and the profession of a bookseller. They carefully selected their favorite titles that will be featured during the fair, contributing not only to the selection process but also creating handwritten pop-ups to express their thoughts on each book.
The upcoming event on August 18 invites visitors to engage with the books handpicked by the children, showcasing their interests and dreams. This initiative is vital in giving children who may not usually visit bookstores the opportunity to freely explore literature. The transformative power of experiencing a bookshop cannot be overstated. Those unforeseen encounters with books that lie outside their familiar world can foster curiosity and inspire a lifelong love of reading. This initiative not only supports access to books but also promotes social participation and responsibility within the community, giving hope for a future where experiences can be shared among all.
The Role of Literature Concierge Hiroki Eto
Hiroki Eto, born in August 1975 in Hiroshima, has had a lifelong passion for books. Despite initially venturing into furniture sales, his journey would eventually lead him to the world of bookselling, driven by a desire to create enriching experiences for readers. He spent nine fruitful years in an established book store in Hiroshima, honing the art of creating engaging spaces and building connections with readers, which became the foundation for his work in bookstore design.
His current role as the Literature Concierge at Tsutaya Books involves curating literary experiences that resonate with a diverse audience. This upcoming ‘Our Bookstore’ fair is a testament to Eto’s commitment to fostering a reading culture among younger generations.
