Claros Technologies Sets New Standard in PFAS Destruction with Landmark Pilot Program

Claros Technologies Sets New Standard in PFAS Destruction

Claros Technologies, based in Minneapolis, has recently marked a significant milestone in environmental sustainability by successfully completing the world's first large-scale demonstration of high-throughput PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) destruction. This landmark project, in collaboration with Daikin America Inc. (DAI), showcased an innovative UV-photochemical process that achieved an impressive over 99.99% destruction rate of targeted PFAS compounds in industrial wastewater.

This pilot was conducted at DAI's facility in Decatur, Alabama, and treated more than 50,000 gallons of wastewater, utilizing a high-flow system capable of processing hundreds of gallons per minute. The achievement signifies a major step forward in addressing the persistent issue of PFAS contamination, which has raised serious environmental and health concerns worldwide.

A Major Breakthrough in PFAS Elimination

Since 2012, DAI has been actively working to reduce large chain PFAS in its wastewater treatment processes by 99.9%. With this new pilot program in cooperation with Claros, the scale of PFAS elimination has proven not only technically feasible but also economically viable. The demonstration underscores the capability of Claros’ technology to operate at scale while maintaining cost-effectiveness, which is pivotal for widespread industrial implementation.

Michelle Bellanca, CEO and Co-Founder of Claros Technologies, expressed her gratitude towards DAI for their support and shared vision. She stated, "We are deeply honored to be partnering with DAI on this groundbreaking initiative. Their vision, leadership, and willingness to invest in next-generation solutions made this achievement possible. This pilot not only proves that large-scale PFAS destruction is viable today but also sets a new standard for environmental sustainability across the manufacturing sector."

The Road Ahead for Commercialization

Following the success of this initial demonstration, Claros Technologies and Daikin America plan to continue their collaboration in future pilot work. This next phase aims to enhance the efficiency and destruction capabilities of the technology even further. The companies are optimistic about the potential for commercial deployment of the technology, which would facilitate significant strides in environmental protection across various industries that deal with PFAS.
