Joe-Ann Fergus Appointed as Executive Director of Massachusetts Nurses Association
The Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) has taken a significant step forward in leadership by appointing Joe-Ann Fergus, RN, PhD, as its new Executive Director. This announcement comes from the MNA's Board of Directors, marking an important transition for the largest healthcare union representing nurses and healthcare professionals in the Commonwealth. With more than 20 years of dedicated service within the MNA, Fergus is no stranger to the challenges and triumphs of healthcare advocacy.
Katie Murphy, the current MNA President and an experienced ICU nurse, expressed excitement about Fergus's appointment. "Joe-Ann has dedicated her career to uplifting nurses and healthcare professionals, and we are thrilled to welcome her as the next Executive Director of the MNA," said Murphy. She highlighted Fergus's unparalleled passion, wisdom, and vision, which are essential for navigating the upcoming challenges and opportunities in healthcare.
Fergus's journey with the MNA began as a staff nurse and elected bargaining unit leader at the Visiting Nurses Association of Boston. She subsequently advanced to various leadership roles within the organization, including Associate Director in Labor Relations, Director of Member Services, and Acting Director of the Division of Nursing, Health Safety, and Labor Education. Each of these positions allowed her to grow her expertise and impact the organization positively.
Her professional accomplishments are underscored by an impressive academic background. Fergus holds a PhD in Nursing/Public Policy from UMass Boston, an MA in Dispute Resolution, and a BSN from Simmons College. She has also contributed to nursing education as an adjunct professor, demonstrating her commitment to fostering the next generation of nursing leaders.
The announcement of Fergus's appointment comes during a pivotal period for the MNA, following the retirement of Julie Pinkham, who served for over two decades. Pinkham’s leadership saw the MNA achieve significant milestones, including disaffiliating from the American Nurses Association and advocating for important legislation affecting healthcare in Massachusetts. Joe-Ann Fergus steps into this role at a time when the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, requiring strong and proactive leadership.
"I am deeply honored to be stepping into this amazing role as Executive Director," Fergus expressed, highlighting her commitment to strengthening the members’ voices within the union. "The MNA is strongly positioned to amplify the voices and power of our members and workers everywhere. We're entering a period filled with opportunities to organize new members, empower existing ones, and forge strong relationships with coalition partners who share our vision."
Murphy noted that Fergus's experience and dedication to inclusivity and collaboration will be crucial as the MNA faces upcoming challenges and seeks to enhance the quality of healthcare for the communities they serve. With her at the helm, the board is confident about shaping the future of nursing and protecting patient care in Massachusetts.
As the MNA welcomes Joe-Ann Fergus as their new Executive Director, the organization stands on the cusp of new possibilities for advocacy, outreach, and member engagement—vital aspects as they continue to support nurses, healthcare professionals, and the health of communities across the Commonwealth.
