Long Island University Collaborates with New York Islanders and UBS Arena for Hockey Growth
A Strategic Alliance in Hockey
In a groundbreaking move for hockey lovers in the New York City region, Long Island University (LIU), the New York Islanders, and UBS Arena have forged a significant five-year partnership. This collaboration aims to promote the sport of hockey, focusing on enhancing opportunities for players and fostering community connections.
LIU is uniquely positioned as the only university in New York City with both men's and women's Division I hockey programs. Through this partnership, LIU and the Islanders will work together to increase the visibility of hockey and make Long Island a hub for the sport. LIU President, Kimberly R. Cline, emphasized the university’s commitment, stating, "This partnership reflects Long Island University's commitment to Division I Hockey and our belief in the continued growth of the sport in this region."
Empire State Holiday Invitational
One of the key components of this partnership will be the establishment of the Empire State Holiday Invitational, an annual tournament featuring Division I men's hockey teams, hosted at UBS Arena. LIU will not only serve as the host but also compete in the inaugural event scheduled for December 28-29, 2026. This tournament will attract competitors from various programs and is expected to establish a new tradition within the hockey community.
Additionally, LIU will collaborate with the Islanders on their "Learn to Play" initiative, which engages children throughout Long Island by introducing them to the sport. This program serves as a vital stepping stone for the next generation of hockey players, ensuring that the sport continues to flourish.
A Comprehensive Integration
The partnership will see LIU merchandise integrated into the Isles Pro Shop at the Northwell Health Ice Center, the primary practice facility for the Islanders and home to LIU's hockey programs. This collaboration includes permanent locker rooms, coaching offices, and branded lounges, creating a seamless experience for athletes and fans alike.
"By hosting the Empire State Holiday Invitational and integrating LIU into our community programs, we're building a true pipeline for athletes and fans," remarked Kelly Cheeseman, President of Business Operations for the Islanders and UBS Arena. This partnership not only aims to build athletic skills but also fosters a community spirit around the sport of hockey.
Opportunities for Students
The agreement paves the way for enhanced engagement opportunities for LIU students. They will gain unique access to UBS Arena, including behind-the-scenes tours, special student ticket offerings, and direct interactions with executives from the Islanders and UBS Arena through campus events and experiential learning initiatives.
