Shanghai Electric Expands Clean Energy Initiatives in Romania
On October 1, 2025, Shanghai Electric, listed on both the Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727), celebrated a pivotal milestone—signing an agreement with Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd. for the general contractor role in the second phase of a 342 MW solar power plant in Parau, Romania. This project is poised to deliver clean electricity to both residential and commercial users, reinforcing Shanghai Electric's commitment to advancing green energy in Central and Eastern Europe.
"Shanghai Electric will leverage its technological strengths in wind energy, photovoltaics, and energy storage to drive the region's green transformation," stated Wu Lei, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Shanghai Electric Group. He further emphasized that, building on their successful projects in Romania, the company aims to enhance its presence in Central and Eastern Europe by providing tailored solutions that will expedite Romania's energy transition.
The Parau Phase II Project is the fourth solar initiative by Shanghai Electric in Romania, showcasing the company's ongoing contributions to the renewable energy sector in the country. This endeavor follows the successful launch of the Phase I solar project in Parau, which has a capacity of 91.4 MW and was also executed under an EPC contract by Shanghai Electric. Notably, the Phase I project received provisional acceptance from the client in November 2024 and currently supplies environmentally-friendly electricity to approximately 70,000 households, resulting in an annual reduction of around 6,800 tons of carbon emissions.
In addition to the Parau Projects, Shanghai Electric's portfolio in Romania includes the Schultu solar project, with a capacity of 56 MW, which obtained provisional operational approval in June this year and is currently under a two-year warranty and operational period. Moreover, the EPC project for the 60 MW Ovidi solar installation, contracted in January, is actively under development.
As of October 2025, the total installed capacity of Shanghai Electric's projects in Romania reaches approximately 550 MW, marking a significant long-term growth trajectory for clean energy development in the country. On the same day of signing the Parau Phase II project contract, Wu Lei held separate meetings with Chen Feng, the Chinese ambassador to Romania, and Istvan-Lorant Antal, Chairman of the Romanian Energy Commission. "Romania is actively promoting the transformation of its energy structure, mainly focusing on photovoltaics, energy storage, gas turbines, and energy transmission and distribution," remarked Antal, expressing eagerness to deepen cooperation with distinguished enterprises like Shanghai Electric to jointly develop renewable energy projects.
Moreover, Wu Lei engaged in high-level discussions with the management of the Austrian Group OMV to explore new collaborative opportunities within the region's energy sector, further solidifying Shanghai Electric's integral role in Romania's energy transition towards renewable sources.
