Innovative VR Shelf Shopping Project Launched in Yamagata for Community Support

Innovative VR Shelf Shopping Project in Yamagata

In an effort to improve shopping experiences within challenging areas, BIPROGY and Yamazawa are embarking on an exciting trial of a new shopping model utilizing a "VR Shelf" technology in Kaneyama Town, Yamagata Prefecture. This groundbreaking project, set to take place in November 2026, aims to provide users the ability to browse life-sized products via a screen, significantly enhancing convenience and contributing to community building.

Project Overview

The demonstration will be held at the Kaneyama Central Community Center, where participants can interact with the VR Shelf to select items they wish to purchase. They will have the opportunity to order fresh food products available at Yamazawa stores and conveniently collect their orders from the community center the following day. This serves not only to deliver ease of shopping but also to bolster the local economy and reinforce community interaction.

Addressing Local Challenges

Yamagata Prefecture, like many rural areas in Japan, faces significant demographic challenges including a declining population and an aging community. Current statistics reveal that the elderly population (people aged 65 and above) makes up 35.6% of Yamagata's total populace, placing it among the highest in Japan. Consequently, many local residents are confronted with difficulties in accessing daily necessities as retail stores diminish due to unprofitability and a lack of successors to carry on family businesses.

Recognizing these pressing issues, BIPROGY and Yamazawa, in collaboration with Yamagata University, initiated this project with the aim of developing a sustainable shopping support model responsive to the needs of such difficult shopping conditions. The goal is to create solutions that allow residents to live comfortably and securely despite the socio-economic challenges they face.

Project Details

The VR shelf will provide a unique shopping experience, allowing users to interact with a virtual version of real-life products displayed on a monitor, thereby ensuring they can make informed choices about their purchases. Participants will provide feedback through surveys, allowing researchers to assess both the convenience of shopping through the VR experience and the effectiveness of the community center as a supportive hub.

Details of the event are as follows:
  • - Dates: November 3 and November 7, 2026
  • - Location: Kaneyama Central Community Center (Address: 571 Kaneyama, Kaneyama-machi, Mogami-gun, Yamagata)
  • - Key Organizations:
- BIPROGY: Responsible for building and managing the shopping solution
- Yamazawa: Overseeing logistics and providing shopping solutions
- Yamagata University: Contributing insights on community dynamics

Future Plans

Building on the findings and insights gained from this trial, BIPROGY and Yamazawa aim to establish a sustainable shopping support model tailored for other challenging retail regions. Their vision is to actively contribute to revitalizing local communities facing similar issues across Japan, striving to foster environments where residents can thrive.

Conclusion

This innovative project represents a vital step toward addressing the complications connected with shopping access and community engagement in Yamagata Prefecture. BIPROGY and Yamazawa are committed to transforming the retail landscape for rural areas, ensuring that no one is left behind.
