Launch of 'Machi DIVE': A New Student Dorm Concept in Sumida-Ku

A New Era of Student Dormitories in Sumida-Ku

In the spring of 2026, a groundbreaking project called 'Machi DIVE' will launch in Sumida-Ku, Kyojima. This innovative student dormitory aims to connect students with the local community, creating an environment where they can learn and live as integral members of the neighborhood.

What is the 'Machi DIVE' Project?

'Machi DIVE' is not just a conventional student dorm; it is envisioned as a collaborative learning space that fuels growth for both students and the local area. Designed to maximize the use of traditional row houses, the project seeks to integrate students into the community, enabling them to engage actively with local events and issues.

One of the key components involves students participating in community events such as Sumida Mukojima EXPO. Additionally, regular contests will be held for high school and university students to propose innovative solutions to local challenges. These initiatives are designed to cultivate students' ability to think critically and act independently while enriching the community's vitality with youthful energy.

Kickoff Workshop

To mark the project's commencement, a special one-day workshop is scheduled. This event invites participants to not merely listen but actively explore Kyojima, absorbing its unique atmosphere. Understanding the Concept of Distributed Student Dormitories

Borrowing inspiration from the Italian concept of 'Albergo Diffuso', which translates to distributed hotel, 'Machi DIVE' aims to revitalize vacant row houses across the region at affordable rates for students. The goal is to ensure that students do not feel isolated and that local residents can harness the enthusiasm of younger generations, transmitting the culture of the town to future generations. Existing row house facilities in Kyojima will continue to be utilized under this visionary concept.

Albergo Diffuso refers to a form of accommodation involving the conversion of old houses in towns and villages into guest rooms, creating a cohesive hospitality business in that area. This style not only addresses issues related to vacant properties spawned by a declining birthrate and an aging population but also encourages movement and interaction among visitors, ultimately revitalizing the community.

Organizers

This initiative is spearheaded by the Machi DIVE Project Executive Committee, including prominent representatives such as Daiki Goto from the Yashima Flower Cultural Foundation and others dedicated to enriching the community.

Are you ready to envision the future of communal living for students? We are eager to welcome your participation and ideas!
