Insight into the Spending Habits of 40-Something Women on Their Favorite Activities

In a recent study conducted by Mode Media Japan, a lifestyle media focused on working women in their 40s, it was revealed that among women in this age group actively participating in favorite activities, 17.7% spend over 100,000 yen (approximately $1,000) annually. This article explores the motivations, feelings, and spending behaviors of these women, providing insight into the phenomena known as "oshi-katsu," or engaging in fandom activities.

Survey Overview

The survey involved 300 women aged between 40 and 49 who are currently active in their fandoms. It focused on how they allocate their time and money towards their hobbies and examined their relationships with family and partners regarding these interests. The results showed a significant divide in spending habits and perspectives toward their involvement in such activities.

Key Findings

Spending on Hobbies

An impressive 68.3% of the women reported spending less than 50,000 yen annually on their hobbies. However, a notable 17.7% invested over 100,000 yen. The breakdown is as follows:
  • - Less than 10,000 yen: 29.0%
  • - Between 10,000 and 30,000 yen: 23.0%
  • - Between 30,000 and 50,000 yen: 16.3%
  • - Between 50,000 and 100,000 yen: 14.0%
  • - Beyond 100,000 yen: 17.7%

The tendency to spend over 100,000 yen was driven by a shared sense of enjoyment but led to feelings of concern about overspending compared to those spending less.

Experiences with Fandom

Over half of the participants (53.7%) have attended live events such as concerts and theatrical performances, while 36.0% enjoy watching these experiences online. Notably, 21.3% have traveled for their fandoms, indicating a willingness to prioritize these activities significantly in their life.

Perception of Spending

When asked about their feelings regarding spending and time dedicated to their hobbies, 32.7% expressed concern about overspending. Conversely, 31.7% indicated that they consider these expenses necessary, and 30.7% stated they stick to a set budget for enjoyment. Intriguingly, individuals spending over 100,000 yen were more likely to feel guilty or concerned about their financial commitments than those spending less.

Adjustments Made to Accommodate Hobbies

To maintain their entertainment expenses, approximately 37.3% of women indicated that they do not consciously reduce spending in other areas. However, nearly 30% reported cutting back on personal clothing, dining out, and beauty products to fund their hobbies, reflecting the sacrifices made for personal enjoyment.

Communication with Family and Partners

In terms of openness with family, 52.2% openly discuss their hobbies and are understood by their partners. However, about 10.9% were secretive about their spending and enthusiasm, highlighting a divide in personal finance attitudes within families.

What They Gain from Their Hobbies

The most significant benefits identified from engaging in these activities included a boost in daily motivation (73.7%), stress relief (55.7%), and increased drive to excel in work and home responsibilities (46.3%). This demonstrates the positive impact that personal hobbies can have on overall well-being, particularly within the busy lives of 40-something women.

Conclusion

In summary, the survey highlights the diverse ways in which women in their 40s participate in hobbies, with significant differences in financial commitments. While many enjoy their involvement in these activities, there is also a palpable concern regarding overspending and how that affects their personal lives. Ultimately, this study underscores the delicate balance between indulgence in personal interests and practical financial management, illuminating the complexities women face when engaging in their beloved pastimes.
